This week on the IronWomen Podcast, Haley and Alyssa are chatting with Swedish professional triathlete and medical doctor Sara Svensk. Sara raced her first triathlon in 2014, by 2015 she won her age group at the ITU Long course world championship and at the 70.3 distance national championship in Sweden. With her quick rise to the top of the age group ranks, Sara decided to make the jump to professional racing in 2016. Since then, Sara has amassed numerous podium and top ten finishes at both the Ironman and 70.3 distances, including numerous wins in 2019. After this incredible year, Sara was poised to make an even bigger splash in 2020. However, with the disruption of races and facing a global pandemic Sara made the decision to return to practicing medicine full time in 2020 where she felt she was most needed.
Even with the break in racing, Sara knew she would return to taking on the pro ranks. After a bout of COVID-19 and ensuing cardiac complications, Sara’s return to racing was slower than she hoped it would be. But, she made up for lost time at Ironman Cozumel in November of 2021, finishing in 8:22, and setting the women’s fastest known time for an Ironman race. In 2022 Sara has committed to being a full-time athlete and set aside her medical practice for now. She fills us in on her race plans for the year, which include the Ironman World Championships in both St. George and Kona.
