    A Greek to Remember

    Diogenes was a famous Greek philosopher of the fourth century B.C., who established the philosophy of cynicism. He often walked about in the daytime holding a lighted lantern, peering around as if he were looking for something. When questioned about his odd behavior, he would reply, "I am searching for an honest man."

      Diogenes held that the good man was self-sufficient and did not require material comforts or wealth. He believed that wealth and possessions constrained humanity's natural state of freedom. In keeping with his philosophy, he was perfectly satisfied with making his home in a large tub discarded from the Temple of Cybele, the goddess of nature. This earthen tub, called a pithos, and formerly been used for holding wine or oil for the sacrifices at the temple.

      One day, Alexander the Great, conqueror of half the civilized world, saw Diogenes sitting in his tub in the sunshine. So the king, surrounded by his countries, approached Diogenes and said, "I am Alexander the Great." The philosopher replied rather contemptuously, "I am Diogenes, the Cynic." Alexander then asked him if he could help him in any way. "Yes," shot back Diogenes, "don't stand between me and the sun." A surprised Alexander then replied quickly, "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

    Freedom Parrot

    A man, a great man, a fighter for freedom was traveling in the mountains. He stayed in a caravans for the night. He was amazed that in the caravans there was a beautiful parrot in a golden cage, continually repeating "Freedom! Freedom!". And it was such a place that when the parrot repeated the word "Freedom!" it would go on echoing in the valleys, in the mountains.

    The man thought: "I have seen many parrots, and I have thought they must want to be free from those cages... but I have never seen such a parrot whose whole day, from the morning to the evening when he goes to sleep, is spent in calling out for freedom." He had an idea. In the middle of the night, when the owner was fast asleep, he got up and opened the door of the cage. He whispered to the parrot, "Now get out."

    But he was very surprised that the parrot was clinging to the bars of the cage. He said to him again and again, "Have you forgotten about freedom? Just get out! The door is open and the owner is fast asleep; nobody will ever know. You just fly into the sky; the whole sky is yours."

    But the parrot was clinging so deeply, so hard, that the man said, "What is the matter? Are you mad?" He tried to take the parrot out with his own hands, but the parrot started pecking at him, and at the same time he was shouting, "Freedom! Freedom!" The valleys in the night echoed and re-echoed, but the man was also stubborn; he was a freedom fighter.

    He pulled the parrot out and threw him into the sky; and he was very satisfied, although his hand was hurt. The parrot had attacked him as forcefully as he could, but the man was immensely satisfied that he had made a soul free. He went to sleep.

    In the morning, as the man was waking up, he heard the parrot shouting, "Freedom! Freedom" He thought perhaps the parrot must be sitting on a tree or on a rock. But when he came out, the parrot was sitting in the cage. The door was open.

    A Psalm of Life

    ——by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

    1

    Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

    "Life is but an empty dream! "

    for the soul is dead that slumbers,

    And things are not what they seem.

    2

    Life is real! Life is earnest!

    And the grave is not its goal;

    "Dust thou art, to dust returnest, "

    Was not spoken of the soul.

    3

    Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

    Is our destined end our way;

    But to act, that much to-morrow

    Find us farther than to-day.

    4

    Art is long , and Time is fleeting,

    And our hearts, though stout and brave,

    Still, like muffled drums, are beating

    Funeral marches to the grave.

    5

    In the world's broad field of battle,

    In the bivouac of Life,

    Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

    Be a hero in the strife!

    6

    Trust no Future,howe'er pleasant!

    Let the dead Past bury its dead!

    Act, -act in the living Present!

    Heart within, and God o'erhead!

    7

    Lives of great men all remind us

    We can make our lives sublime,

    And , departing , leave behind us

    Footprints on the sands of time;

    8

    Footprints, that perhaps another,

    Sailing o'er life solemn main,

    A forlorn and shipwrecked brother ,

    Seeing, shall take heart again.

    9

    Let us , then, be up and doing,

    With a heart for any fate;

    Still achieving, still pursuing,

    Learn to labor and to wait.

    人生颂

    不要在哀伤的诗句里告诉我:

    “人生不过是一场幻梦!”

    灵魂睡着了,就等于死了,

    事物的真相与外表不同。

    人生是真切的!人生是实在的!

    它的归宿决不是荒坟;

    “你本是尘土,必归于尘土”,

    这是指躯壳,不是指灵魂。

    我们命定的目标和道路

    不是享乐,也不是受苦;

    而是行动,在每个明天

    都超越今天,跨出新步。

    智艺无穷,时光飞逝;

    这颗心,纵然勇敢坚强,

    也只如鼙鼓,闷声敲动着,

    一下又一下,向坟地送丧。

    世界是一片辽阔的战场,

    人生是到处扎寨安营;

    莫学那听人驱策的哑畜,

    做一个威武善战的英雄!

    别指望将来,不管它多可爱!

    把已逝的过去永久掩埋!

    行动吧--趁着活生生的现在!

    心中有赤心,头上有真宰!

    伟人的生平启示我们:

    我们能够生活得高尚,

    而当告别人世的时候,

    留下脚印在时间的沙上;

    也许我们有一个兄弟

    航行在庄严的人生大海,

    遇险沉了船,绝望的时刻,

    会看到这脚印而振作起来。

    那么,让我们起来干吧,

    对任何命运要敢于担戴;

    不断地进取,不断地追求,

    要善于劳动,善于等待。

    Clear Your Mental Space

    Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion---like stress, anger, or frustration. What was going through your mind as you were going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered with thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to think?

    The next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Yes, that’s right, stop. Whatever you’re doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you’re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.

    Allow that emotion to consume you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. Don’t cheat yourself here. Take the entire minute---but only one minute---to do nothing else but feel that emotion.?

    When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I willing to keep holding on to this negative emotion as I go through the rest of the day?”

    Once you’ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really fell it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion clears rather quickly.

    If you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is OK. Allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion.

    When you feel you’ve had enough of it, ask yourself if you’re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of the day. If not, take a deep breath. As you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath.?

    Try it. Next time you’re in the middle of a negative emotion, give yourself the space to feel it and see what happens. Keep a piece of paper with you that says what you are thinking about.

    This will remind you of the steps to the process. Remember; take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. Then, when you feel you’ve felt it enough, release it---really let go of it. You will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from a negative situation and get to what you really want to do!

    清理心灵的空间

    想下你最近一次感受到的消极情绪,例如压力,愤怒或挫折。当你处于那种消极情绪时你在想些什么?是充满了混乱的思绪?还是陷于麻木,无法思考?

    下次当你发现自己处于非常紧张的状态时,或是你感到气愤或受挫时,停下来。是的,对,停下来。不管你在做什么,停下来坐上一分钟。坐着的时候,让自己完全沉浸在那种消极情绪之中。?

    让那种消极情绪吞噬你,给自己一分钟的时间去真切地体会那种情绪,不要欺骗自己。花整整一分钟的时间 – 但只有一分钟 – 去体会那种情绪,别的什么也不要做。

    当一分钟结束时,问自己:“我是否想在今天余下的时间里继续保持这种消极情绪?”

    一旦你允许自己完全沉浸在那种情绪当中并真切体会到它,你就会惊奇地发现那种情绪很快就消失了。

    如果你觉得还需要点时间来保持那种情绪,没关系,再给自己一分钟的时间去体会它。

    如果你觉得自己已经充分体会了那种情绪,那就问自己是否愿意在今天余下的时间里继续保持这种消极情绪。如果不愿意,那就深呼吸。呼气的时候,把所有的消极情绪都释放出去。

    你下次笼罩消极情绪时,试一下这种做法,给自己一点空间来体会那种情绪并看看会发生什么。随身带一张写下你的感想。这会提醒你该怎样去做。记住,要花你所需要的时间去真正沉浸于那种情绪之中。然后,当你感到自己已经充分体会到了它。你会惊奇地发现,你很快就能摆脱消极情绪,并开始做你真正想做的事情!
