Building a Private Practice and Safe Space for LGBTQ+ Clients and Families: Emily's Story

Listen Later

It is so important for us as professionals to create a safe space for ourselves and for our patients. Don’t you agree?

Private practice allows us to do that.

I am talking all about this with Emily McCullough from Parade Pediatric Speech Therapy which is a practice that is committed to providing a safe space for all kids and families on their communication journey.

Emily has more than 10 years of experience helping children and teens gain the communication skills they need to connect and interact meaningfully with the people in their lives. She believes that every child brings unique gifts and insights into the therapy process and that parents and caregivers know their child best. Emily values her partnerships with parents and caregivers and working as a team to help children feel proud, successful and empowered communicators!

She has extensive training and clinical experience in articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, autism, and communication disorders in bilingual and culturally and linguistically diverse children. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Emily received her B.A. in Spanish from Guilford College in North Carolina and her M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Texas at Austin with a certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology.

Emily lives in Austin, TX. For fun, she enjoys getting outside, composing music, reading and spending time with her wife and dog.

In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

  • The benefits of teletherapy for SLPs and students
  • What it takes to start a teletherapy private practice
  • How private practice allows you to create a safe space for yourself and your patients
  • Why being yourself as an SLP encourages your students to be themselves
  • How private practice allows for the freedom and ability to lead with your own values

I love this conversation with Emily because it really highlights how private practice allows SLPs to create an ideal work environment that suits their interests, personality and season of life.

I think it's really important for there to be more diversity in the field and also for there to be more diverse options for our patients, so I am glad you got to hear how Emily does this at her private practice.

Emily actually got started by joining the Start Your Private Practice System, and we are re-opening the doors to this really soon!
