AJapanese company recently released a white crust milk bread that it hopes will curb the practiceof removing the crust when making sandwiches.

Didyou know that the vast majority of milk bread sandwiches made daily in Japanhave their crusts removed? While crusted sandwiches do exist, the generalperception is that the fluffy, white part of Japanese shokupan milk bread istastier than the brown crust. This perception dates back to a time long agowhen the crust was harder to chew through, but things are definitely a lotdifferent today. The crust is nice and soft, but people still seem to prefercrusted sandwiches. That results in a lot of food waste, but one company hopesto change that with an innovative white crust shokupan bread.

TokyoChef Sugimoto and his team at the Imperial Hotel Co., Ltd. spent six monthsdeveloping an innovative type of bread that they claim eliminates the need toget rid of the crust. People have been coming up with all sorts of ways torecycle bread crusts in order to curb food waste, but Sugimoto’s idea was tocreate a crust that didn’t have to be discarded in the first place.

AlthoughImperial Hotel did not fully disclose the secret behind its new white crust bread, itdid mention that it is baked slowly at a lower temperature than regularshokupan bread, which results in a white color all through the bread and a moremoist texture.

Foundedin 1890 by Japanese aristocracy,Imperial Hotel used to serve crustless milk bread sandwiches to its customers,but starting on October 1st of this year, they will be switching to this newwhite crust bread, thus decreasing its food waste considerably.

Thewhite crust bread will be served in the Imperial Hotel’s restaurants and atbanquets, but people will also be able to purchase it from GargantuaDelicatessen, a luxury bakery that has been operating since 1971.

      Experts said the government hasalready introduced a series of stimuluspoliciesfor infrastructure spending to shore up growth, and its accelerated push toconstruct key projects will help boost domestic demand, expand effectiveinvestment and stabilize the overall economy.

      They said China's economy willcontinue to pick up in the third and fourth quarters of the year with existingpolicy support and forceful infrastructure spending.

      The country will support theconstruction of major projects, with a key focus on implementing 102 keyprojects mapped out during the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) andprojects in the five-year plan for transportation development, said ZhengJian, director of the Department of Infrastructure Development at the NationalDevelopment and Reform Commission.
