When a group of Yale students inverted the pie tins that were used to cover the delivery of their bakery orders more than a century ago, they found an airfoil shape that could be thrown around for fun on campus.

This prototype of the frisbee has evolved and since the beginning of the 20th century it has become a popular sport and pastime.

Yet, the activity has beenconfinedto a small number of players in China over the years. Recently, the game has made its presence felt and has become one of the most popular emerging sports in the country.

"I was under the impression that it was only a toy for children and pets," says Qu Xinchen who started playing frisbee in April.

"It never occurred to me that it was a competitive game with a social functions" he adds.

The Beijing resident in his early 30s tried his hand, literally, at the game after being invited by one of his friends.

这位30岁出头的北京人受一位朋友的邀请，尝试了一下飞盘游戏。

"The gyms were closed because of the COVID-19resurgencethen, and indoor activities were subjected to restrictive conditions," Qu recalls, adding that he's also seen many enthusiasts posting their frisbee experience on the social media platform Xiaohongshu.

屈欣晨回忆说：“因为当时疫情反弹，健身房都关门了，而且室内活动受到了限制。”他还说，他看到许多飞盘爱好者在社交媒体平台小红书上发布了他们的飞盘体验。

Qu went to a game for new players with his friends.

屈欣晨也和他的朋友去参加了一场飞盘比赛。

"It was pretty nice, and we had a coach walking us through the rules and basic skills," he says.

他说：“感觉很好，还有一个教练教我们规则和玩法。”

Each session usually lasted for two hours, and he got to apply the coach's instructions in the second hour with his friends.

每次训练通常有两个小时，第二个小时里他就和朋友一起跟着教练的指导练习。

Qu discovered that the rules of frisbee were relatively simple.

屈欣晨发现飞盘的规则相对简单。

The main objective is to catch the frisbee in the end zone. Essential to the game is the fact that a thrower can't move from the spot they caught it. A team will work together to try and get the frisbee down the field as efficiently as possible by throwing the disc to an advancing teammate.

游戏的主要目标是在得分区接住飞盘。最重要的一点是，接到飞盘的队员不能走步。团队一起努力把飞盘扔给前进的队友，尽可能把飞盘扔到得分区。

"For example, when you hold the frisbee, you cannot move but instead youpivoton one foot until the disc is released," Qu says.

When not holding the disc, a player is free to run anywhere within the field of play to receive a pass.

Qu plays frisbee with his friends twice a week and has been to events arranged by four different clubs across the capital.

屈欣晨和朋友一周玩两次飞盘，他已经参加了北京四个不同俱乐部组织的活动。

The sport not only satisfies his need for exercise, but also allows him to catch up with his friends.

这项运动不仅满足了他锻炼身体的需求，也能经常和朋友见面。

"I felt I was getting the best of both worlds," Qu says.

“我感觉这就是两全其美的事。”

"I usually burn 1,400 calories during a session, and mystaminahas improved," he says.

“每次训练我都消耗1400卡路里，而且我的体力也变好了。”

His skills have too, and Qu says he has been able to better appreciate the elegance of the sport.

他的运动技能也有提高，屈欣晨表示他更深刻地体会到这项运动的好处。

"I feel a sense of achievement and I'm proud whenever I score points for my team through cooperation," he says.

More importantly, he gets to see his friends more often.

"Four to five of us usually coordinate our time and sign up together for events near our homes," Qu says.

"After the match, we will have lunch or dinner together."

The frisbee clubs in Beijing usually have a photographer to capture moments in the game.

"The photos are very nice and can be reposted on our social media accounts as a reminder of the good times," Qu says.

屈欣晨说，“照片拍得很好，我们也可以在社交媒体上转发，就当是个留念。”

More people like Qu are tuning into frisbee.

越来越多的人像屈欣晨一样参与到飞盘运动中去。

Searches for frisbee surged 17-fold during the first three months of this year on Xiaohongshu, as compared with the same period last year, the social media platform reports. The topic of frisbee has attracted more than 42.4 million views on the platform.

据社交媒体平台小红书发布的报告，今年前三个月，小红书上飞盘的搜索量同比增长了17倍。飞盘的话题在该平台上已经吸引了超过4240万的浏览量。

Those figures have continued to grow over the following months.

On July 7, the General Administration of Sports has announced the first Chinese Frisbee League, which is planned for August.

"Frisbee has been widely enjoyed by the public and has developed rapidly in recent years," says the administration's announcement of the league's formation.

The announcement points out that the sport has become an important part of national fitness activities.

"Most of our clients are white-collar workers, around 30," says Sun Dawei, a former gym trainer who co-established The North frisbee club with a friend in April.

“我们的客户大多是30岁左右的白领，”孙大伟（音译）说。他曾是一名健身教练，今年4月和朋友创办了一家飞盘俱乐部。

He practiced frisbee back in Tianjin University of Sport in 2011 and, between 2014 and 19, won top prizes at multiple frisbee competitions in Shanghai, Nanjing of Jiangsu province, Beijing and Xiamen of Fujian province.

"There must have been only about 100 people playing professionally, because I saw the same faces all the time at those matches," he recalls.

Sun sensed the surging popularity of the sport after Spring Festival this year.

So far, his club has gathered more than 500 members.

The low threshold for playing in terms of age limits and equipment have both helped fuel the popularity of frisbee in China, experts say.

Zhang Kun, a veteran player and organizer of frisbee events in Beijing, believes social media platforms and online influencers played a positive role in promoting the sport during the early days of the pandemic.

"People now think it is cool to play frisbee," Zhang says.

The sport is easy topick up and understand, he adds.

"Your attention will be fixed on the flying disc once it is thrown and airborne, and you might feel you're flying too," Zhang says, adding that the experience is a great outlet for venting the pressures of fast-paced city life.

Costs for playing frisbee range from 100-150 yuan ($14.9-$22.4) per player, and organizers generally make a gross profit of 1,000-3,000 yuan.

It is solely up to each club to set a price for the event organization and training and to decide about buying insurance for participants, says Chen Shuo, a manager with the YJ frisbee club in Beijing.

French fashion brand Dior encountered controversy again on Chinese social media platforms as some Hanfu lovers accused the brand of copycatting the design of traditional Chinese horse face skirt in its fall 2022 collection without clarifying the source of inspiration.

法国时尚品牌迪奥再度引发热议，有汉服爱好者发现，迪奥品牌2022年的早秋系列抄袭了中国传统服饰马面裙的设计，且没有注明设计灵感来源。

Controversy roared Friday afternoon after some users of China's Sina Weibo published posts on the platform revealing that a skirt Dior released recently in South Korea seemed to look very similar to Chinese traditional horse face skirt.

7月15日下午，有网友发文质疑迪奥近日于韩国发布的一款半身裙疑似抄袭华服马面裙，引发众议。

The Hanfu lovers highlighted that they deemed Dior's new collection as a copycat as it had high split on the front and back, folds on both sides as well as the design in the waist, which are all typical elements of a horse face skirt, while Dior insisted it was an original design.

汉服爱好者认为，这款半身裙的前后裙门、可开叉设计，两侧裙褶以及裙腰的设计都是马面裙的典型元素，而迪奥却坚称这是品牌原创设计。

The Global Times found that, on the official website of Dior, the brand said the controversial mid-length skirt is "a hallmark Dior silhouette" in the description, which contains no content that indicates the skirt has anything to do with Chinese traditional clothes or culture.

据环球时报，迪奥官网的商品说明写到，这款半身裙采用了“标志性的Dior廓形”，且没有注明此款裙子是否与中国传统服装或文化有关。

Horse face skirt, ma mian qun in Chinese, according to Hanfu lovers, is a kind of traditional Chinese clothes that has folds on both sides. It has four skirt doors on the front and back overlapping each other. And the overlapping part of the skirt doors is called ma mian (horse face).

据汉服爱好者介绍，马面裙是中国古代汉族女子主要裙式之一，前后里外共有四个裙门，两两重合，中间裙门重合而成的光面，俗称“马面”。

The skirt was very popular in the Ming Dynasty from empress to ordinary people. According to different classes and occasions, the material, pattern, and color of horse face skirts are different.

马面裙流行于明朝，上至皇亲国戚，下至黎民百姓均有穿着。根据不同的阶级和场合，马面裙的材质、纹样及颜色也有相应的区别。

A major concern of some Hanfu lovers is that, given Dior's global influence, its global consumers take it as a Dior original, Chinese horse face skirt would instead to be taken as a "copycat" by some people who are not familiar with Chinese culture, which is confusing.

Dior had not made any response to the controversy as of press time.

It is not the first time for Dior to be trapped in controversy in China.

Chinese pop singer and actor Jackson Yee has given up a lifetime job offer from the National Theatre of China after widespread publicoutrageand criticism about celebrity privilege.

Yee, 22, posted a long message on his Sina Weibo account on Sunday, explaining the reason behind him applying for the job at the theater, saying the audition and interview were above board and that he will not take the job, hoping to ease the debate.

The controversy began on July 6 when the National Theatre of China released its annual admissions list for 2022.

Three young Chinese celebrities, headlined by Yee, were on the list.

As a national art institute of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the theater has a history dating back to 1941 and is known for producing and staging classic Chinese dramas, such as works adapted from Chinese literature and tales about the history and achievements of the country.

People wondered if the three young actors had been treated differently during the application process because of theirstardom.

Competition for any jobs with bianzhi is always fierce, and many netizens expressed their doubts about the transparency of the hiring process for celebrities. They cited the fact that in the theater's recruitment notice it required "unemployed individuals".

On Sunday, Hu, 22, who graduated from the same university as Yee, responded to the debate around his admission on Sina Weibo, shortly after Yee released his.

Based on the job applicants' scores, 10 people were finally admitted: seven actors and actresses, a director, a sound engineer and a costume designer.

In fact, this is not the first self-portrait to be found on the back of another Van Gogh painting. Many artists reuse canvases in order to control the number of paintings they produce. A vast majority ofVan Gogh’s self-portraits were painted during his stay in Paris. He was short on money, so he reused canvases that he had used for other works in Netherlands. Because he also could not afford to hire models, he frequently turned the mirror on his own face.

President Xi Jinping's remarks on the importance of ethnic unity and fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation during his visit to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region have made people in the region feel more confident that by standing together and cherishing ethnic unity, Xinjiang will become more prosperous and they will have a better life.

Ablet Tursun, a resident of the Guyuanxiang community in the regional capital of Urumqi, whose apartment Xi visited, said that the president cares greatly about ethnic unity at the grassroots level as this is the prerequisite for an invincible nation with a bright future.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, inspected Xinjiang from Tuesday to Friday and made important remarks on the region's development. It was his first visit to the region in eight years.

On Wednesday morning, he visited the community in Urumqi's Tianshan District, where more than 95 percent of the residents are from non-Han ethnic groups.

"I invited him to take a seat on the sofa in the living room, but he insisted that I sat down first. I keep on replaying the scene in my head because this small detail shows that he cares about the people," Ablet, who is a member of the Uygur ethnic group, said on Sunday.

Ablet, 67, said Xi expressed great interest in learning about ethnic unity in the community, which is inhabited by people from the Han, Hui, Uygur, Kazak and Tatar ethnic groups.

"Xi asked me how people from different ethnic groups in the neighborhood get along with each other. I said that we see caring for each other as natural behavior. Just like he said, we are closely united like the seeds of a pomegranate that stick together," he said.

Ablet said that his neighbors and family recently celebrated Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-Adha, which fell on July 10 this year. "As usual, people from upstairs and downstairs have all come to visit us and offered their best wishes no matter which ethnic group they are from. The feeling is really heartwarming," he said.

During his visit to the community, Xi stressed that ethnic unity is the lifeline for people of all ethnic groups in China and that all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are inseparable members of the family of the Chinese nation.

People should value the current stability and unity in China, with all 56 ethnic groups standing together. Furthermore, people's support is vital to ensure Xinjiang's lasting stability, he said during his trip to Xinjiang, which has traditionally been home to people from more than 13 ethnic groups and shares a border with eight countries.

"I believe that with people from different ethnic groups in Xinjiang standing together and cherishing ethnic unity, the region will become more prosperous and we will have a better life," Ablet said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Xi visited Xinjiang University in Urumqi, the first stop of his inspection tour of the region. This shows that the central government attaches great importance to the development of talent in the region, said Yao Qiang, president of the university.

China is a unified multiethnic country, with the Chinese people of all ethnic groups united in diversity being a salient feature. Ethnic theories and policies in the country are sound and effective, Xi said during the visit to the university. What's more, China, a country with ethnic unity, is invincible and will have a bright future, he added.

During his trip to the region, Xi also stressed that it's important to develop a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation and encouraged more exchanges and interaction among different ethnic groups. Also, the country needs to take further steps to advance the project that aims to create a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation among young people, he added.

"Xinjiang University aims to create a talent development system that can help students foster a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation and become talents that can take on the responsibility of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," Yao said.

Zhang Jiafei, vice-president of the university's School of Marxism, said young students need to better boost the sense of community for the Chinese nation as well as stand against ethnic separatism and religious extremism on their own initiatives.

While many parents worry that their children spend too much time playing computer games, Kelcey Sihanourath is pleased to see her son Owain pick up his tablet.

With ADHD continuing to affect Owain's school performance over the years, Kelcey says she was "hoping for something more, for any other option".

After each of Owain's sessions she noted his daily behaviour in the app, and tracked his progress.

Soon she started to see small, positive changes in his behaviour. For example, getting ready for school had become smoother, and there were no negative messages from teachers.

And after failing fifth grade, Owain subsequently shot up to getting As and Bs for his work.

The Shanghai government has told all local government departments and companies to treat people who have recovered from COVID-19 equally and without discrimination.

Peng Pai and his wife couldn't agree more. The couple were diagnosed with COVID-19 and received treatment in a temporary hospital in April. Peng said he felt grateful that his boss and colleagues didn't treat him differently when he returned to work in June.
