Universal Beijing Resort tickets for holiday sell out｜北京环球度假区门票已售罄

Tickets for the Universal Beijing Resort sold out within 30 minutes in the early hours of Tuesday morning for visits to the new theme park during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival holiday on Monday and Tuesday, the first two days it is open to the public.

北京环球度假区新主题公园在即将到来的中秋节假期前两天将对公众开放，中秋门票于周二零点开始30分钟内售空。

The long-awaited opening of the resort, which involves an investment of more than 40 billion yuan ($6.2 billion), has been gathering increasing attention since last month, when the timetable was announced for its trial operation, as well as ticket prices and its opening date.

自上月宣布试运营时间表、票价和开业日期以来，对于这家投资超过400亿元人民币（合62亿美元）度假村的开业，人们期待已久。

Enthusiasm for the resort peaked at midnight on Tuesday when tickets went on sale online and the two hotels in the resort started to receive reservations. Many people encountered an internet traffic jam as they attempted to buy tickets.

Dong Xiaobin, a 42-year-old film fan, said he had been looking forward to the opening of the theme park ever since plans for it were announced several years ago.

"At 1 am on Tuesday, I tried to purchase tickets to visit on Monday with my family, but the website was too busy," Dong said.

In fact, Dong was already half-an-hour too late, as tickets for visits on Monday and Tuesday had been snapped up within 30 minutes of going on sale.

"The tickets vanished like vapor on the resort's own app and at authorized tourist agencies," said Dong, who now plans to take his family to the theme park on another day.

According to Qunar, an online travel service provider, searches for hotels near the resort increased more than sevenfold by 12:30 am on Tuesday.

Bookings for flights to Beijing on days near the opening increased by more than 200 percent in the past week compared with the previous week, according to data from Fliggy, Alibaba Group's online travel booking platform.

Song Yu, chairman of Beijing Tourism Group, which is one of the major investors in the theme park, said that it showcased Sino-US cooperation, especially in the private and business sectors.

Emma Raducanu was born in Toronto who has a Romanian father and Chinese mother who came to Britain when she was just two.

Former employees of tutoring companies are mapping out new careers as the nation implements a "double reduction" policy to regulate the industry, which had been expanding rapidly.

A 29-year-old woman who posted a video recently on Douyin, a short-video sharing platform, using the name Shi'er, said she never thought the policy would take away her job at New Oriental Education and Technology Group last month. Her husband also lost his job at Zuoyebang, another online education provider, in August.

抖音号为“十二的阿正”的一名29岁的女性在抖音发布一条视频，她说她从未想过该政策会在上个月夺走她在新东方的工作。她的丈夫也于8月失去了在另一家在线教育机构作业帮的工作。

In the video, she said she worked as auser interface designer at the company for over five years before being laid off on Aug 17.

"About 80 to 90 percent of the staff members in my department were laid off," she said. "It's depressing as my husband lost his job without warning on Aug 4. In late July, the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council jointly released a guideline on the "double reduction" policy, aiming to effectively reduce the excessive homework and after-school tutoring burden on students.

The Ministry of Education said at a news conference late last month that it will enhance supervision of "double reduction" work, making it a priority this year.

The "double reduction" policy bans tutoring companies from offering curriculum-based training on weekends, over national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.

The changed circumstances of tutoring companies has dealt a shock to the sector, both in terms of their market value and the jobs they can offer.

Zhaopin, an online recruitment platform, said recently that about 40 percent of employees in the tutoring sector have left their positions since the policy came into effect, with most of them serving in salesperson and human resources positions.

Governments are making active efforts to help former tutoring sector employees find work and stabilize the job market.

Jinan Public Security Bureau issued a notice on Weibo on the evening of Sept 8 stating that an investigation team is reviewing a case related to the publicoutcry over an online video. The video shows the female boss of a plastic surgery company beating a customer. 

9月8日晚，济南公安在微博发贴通报“网传整形机构女老板殴打顾客视频”一事，称已成立工作专班，对事件进行严查彻查。

"No tolerance is allowed for any illegal behavior. The result of the investigation will be announced to the public in a timely manner," said the latest notice published on Weibo by the High-tech Industry Development Zone Bureau of the Jinan Public Security Bureau. 
“对任何违法行为绝不姑息。调查处理情况将及时向社会公布。”济南公安局高新技术产业开发区分局在微博最新发布的通告中说到。

"Regarding the case circulating online, Jinan Public Security Bureau is investigating the incident and swiftly reached out to the assaulted customer," said an earlier notice. "The relevant persons involved in the case have been summoned on Sept 7 in accordancewith the law and are in the process of questioning."

On Sept 7, a video titled "female boss of a cosmetic surgery institution in Jinan beating a customer" raised the public's eyebrows. In the video, the female boss insulted and beat a female customer, forcing her to sign a settlement agreement after the customer complained to the market supervision department due to the failure of her cosmetic eye surgery. 
"Do you think I will let you leave Jinan alive?" the boss threatened. "Wherever you go in the future I will follow."

Chinese mainland reports 49 new COVID-19 cases, with 22 locally-transmitted. The city of Putian, Fujian province, had reported 32 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 32 local asymptomatic carriers, as of 4 pm Sunday, according to local authorities.

The first two cases in the outbreak involved two students at a primary school in Xianyou on Friday, found during random testing, which is regularly conducted. The two brothers, and later their parents, tested positive.

All kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and tutoring institutions in Putian were to suspend in-person teaching starting Monday, the Putian education bureau said on Sunday.

Schools should provide online instruction for students, who are advised to stay at home and not to attend any gatherings, the bureau said.

Jinghong, in Southwest China's Yunnan province, will soon open a food source base especially developed for Asian elephants, in a bid to reduce conflicts between humans and the animal.

位于中国西南部云南省的景洪市不久将开设一个专门为亚洲象开发的食物源基地，以减少人类与动物之间的冲突。

The project, with investment of 1 million yuan ($154,686), kicked off in December and was completed in May. The base, which covers three townships across 67 hectares, has grown some of the elephants' favorite plants, including 38,000musa basjoo trees, a species of banana.

该项目总投资100万元人民币（154686美元），于12月启动，5月完成。该基地占地67公顷，涵盖三个乡镇，种植了一些大象最喜欢的植物，包括38,000棵芭蕉树（一种香蕉）。

Construction workers also built several ponds and added 2metric tons of salt to meet the elephants' mineral needs.

In late August, experts conducted a preliminary field inspection. The city's forestry and grassland bureau has not revealed the opening date of the base but said it will start operating soon.

Due to ongoing wildlife protection efforts, the number of wild Asian elephants in the province has increased from 170 in 1980 to 300 today. Jinghong is home to about 185 elephants, and their habitat spans about 350,000 hectares.

"The number increase is closely linked to the growing awareness of our people to protect wildlife. The elephants'trek earlier this year is also due to the increasing number of herds," Cha said, referring to a herd of 15 elephants that left their habitat in Xishuangbanna and started migrating north in March last year, with their journey attracting global attention.

“亚洲象种群数量的增加，得益于政府部门对野生动物和生态环境保护工作的重视，包括我们民众保护野生动物的意识也越来越强。像今年年初大象出走，其实跟大象种群数量的增加也有一定的关系。”查伟说，他指的是由15头大象组成的象群在去年3月离开了它们在西双版纳的栖息地并开始向北迁移，并引起了全球关注。

Cha said elephants are very intelligent and understanding of each other. When their population reaches a certain density, a herd will divide to reduce crowding and avoidinterbreeding.

An adult elephant needs 200 kilograms of food every day. With increased protection of nature reserves and reduction of human activities in the reserves, many elephant habitats have grown into dense forests and replaced lowshrubs and plants that elephants feed on. Clusters of tall trees also restrict the animals' movements, forcing them to leave forests and enter farming areas and communities.

Reports of elephants eating corn andsugar cane crops during harvest season are not uncommon. "As elephants enter agricultural lands more frequently, their eating habits have also gradually changed, showing a growing preference for fine grains, high-energy and more nutritiouscash crops," Cha said, adding that the animals have also become very "picky", often selecting the most nutritious corn cobs.

Xi urges solidarity amid virus｜

China will donate an additional 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to developing countries this year on top of its $100 million donation to the COVAX global vaccine initiative to contribute further to global anti-pandemic cooperation, President Xi Jinping said on Thursday.
习近平主席在周四指出，为携手抗击疫情，中方在向“新冠疫苗实施计划”捐赠1亿美元基础上，年内中国将再向发展中国家无偿捐赠1亿剂疫苗。

Xi made the remark when addressing the 13th BRICS Summit via video link in Beijing. BRICS refers to the emerging markets bloc that groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
以上是习近平主席于北京在以视频方式举行金砖国家领导人第十三次会晤中的讲话内容。金砖国家是指六大新兴经济体，包括：巴西、俄罗斯、印度、中国、南非。

China has so far provided more than 1 billion doses of finished and bulk vaccines to over 100 countries and international organizations, and it will strive to provide a total of 2 billion doses by the end of this year, he said.

“截至目前，中方已向100多个国家和国际组织提供超过10亿剂疫苗和原液，将努力全年对外提供20亿剂疫苗。”习主席说到。

Noting that COVID-19 is still raging globally, the road to global recovery remains bumpy and the international order is undergoing profound and complex changes, Xi called on the BRICS countries to work together to meet common challenges.

Xi underlined the need to promote global solidarity against COVID-19, uphold a science-based approach to tracing its origins, oppose politicization and stigmatization, and boost the research, production and equitable distribution of vaccines as a global public good.

"We need to pursue practical cooperation on vaccines, including joint research and production and mutual recognition of standards, and to facilitate the early launch of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Center in a virtual format," he said.

To maintain steady global recovery, Xi called for promoting openness and innovation-driven growth and pushing for economic globalization that is more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial for all.

BRICS countries should strengthen economic cooperation in the spirit of mutual benefit, Xi said, and they need to earnestly implement the Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership 2025, and expand cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, technology and innovation, and green and low-carbon development.

"China proposes to host a BRICS high-level meeting on climate change and a BRICS forum on big data for sustainable development," he said.

Leaders of the BRICS countries vowed to oppose unilateralism and hegemony as well as politicizing the tracing of the origins of the pandemic, and they reiterated their commitment to strengthening communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, jointly coping with climate change and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

A thirteen- or fourteen-year-old girl was sitting on the side of the road, her eyes blank, looking sadly into the distance. The girl’s parents asked her to drop out of school to marry for 30,000 yuan. "I want to study. I don't want to marry..." The girl's cry echoed on the street, but no one responded.

一个十三四岁的女孩坐在路边，眼神空洞，悲伤地看着远方。女孩的父母为赚取3万元要求她辍学结婚。“我想学习。我不想结婚......” 女孩的哭声在街上回荡，但无人回应。

Zhang Guimei, the dean of the Huaping County Children’s Welfare Institute, grabbed the girl by the arm and planned to take the girl away. But the girl's mother threatened Zhang with her life. Zhang couldn't take the girl away. Zhang felt helpless and powerless.

华坪县儿童福利院院长张桂梅抓住女孩的胳膊，正打算把女孩带走。但迎来的是女孩母亲的以死相逼。张桂梅无法将女孩带走。她感到无助又无力。

After witnessing these miseries, Zhang had a dream to set up a free girls' high school so that girls in the mountains could study.

Zhang, who was born in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, moved to Yunnan in 1975. A year after her husband's death in 1996, she volunteered to teach at a middle school in Huaping, hoping to move away from old memories.

出生在东北黑龙江省的张桂梅于1975年搬到云南。1996年丈夫去世一年后，她自愿到华坪县的一所中学任教，希望能摆脱以前的回忆。

She founded Huaping High School for Girls in 2008. Since the boarding school opened, around 2,000 girls from impoverished families in Yunnan's mountainous regions have been enrolled by universities after taking the national college entrance exam, successfully rewriting their fate.

她于2008年创办了华坪女子高级中学。自这所寄宿学校开办以来，约有2000名来自云南山区贫困家庭的女孩在参加全国高考后被大学录取，这所学校成功改写了她们的命运。

However, in April 1997, Zhang was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. To make sure her condition did not affect students preparing for the high school entrance exam, Zhang kept teaching for three months until the students took the exam in July.

而在1997年4月，张桂梅被诊断出患有子宫肌瘤。为了确保她的病情不影响准备中考的学生，张老师坚持任教了三个月，一直坚持到了7月的中考。

The doctors removed a 2-kilogram tumor from Zhang’s body. Although they asked her to rest for at least six months, she returned to her post 24 days after the surgery.

医生从张桂梅体内切除了重达2公斤的肿瘤。医生要求她至少休息6个月，可她在术后的第24天就回到了自己的岗位。

"An educated girl can influence future generations in a positive way," Zhang said, "It is my greatest comfort to be able to change at least one generation through education."

Zhang has changed the fate of these girls by enabling them to pursue education and preventing poverty from being passed on to the next generation.

With fingers and wrists wrapped in medicated tape, Zhang Guimei, founder and principal of the first free high school for girls in China, was presented with the July 1 Medal by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on 29th June.

The medal, established by the CPC Central Committee, is the highest honor in the Party.

Recently, a foreign teacher named Emily Jane O'Dell has drawn attention for not cooperating with China's COVID-19 prevention measures during her stay in China and making racist remarks on overseas social media. 
近日，一位名叫Emily Jane O'Dell（艾米丽）的中国高校美籍教师因违反当地政府疫情防控规定，并在境外社交媒体发表种族主义言论引发舆论关注。

O'Dell is a teacher at the Pittsburgh Institute of the Sichuan University. On Aug 4, she refused to cooperate with local working staff on the COVID-19 prevention measures and had a quarrel with them. She releaseduntenable and racist remarks on overseas social media. Due to the bad impact, the institute decided to terminate her contract.  
艾米丽是四川大学匹兹堡学院的老师。8月4日，艾米丽违反疫情防控规定并与工作人员发生争执，当晚其在社交媒体发布不实及种族主义言论。由于其言行造成恶劣影响，四川大学匹兹堡学院决定与其解聘。 

O'Dell tweeted the racist remarks on Aug 4. She also turned to the US Embassy in China for help, claiming that she was "abducted" against her will and posted pictures of local officers. The officers were smiling in the photos, a sharp contrast with what O'Dell described.

According to Global Times, Wu Jialin, a police officer from the Danba county, said that O'Dell arrived in the county on July 20 and lived in a homestay hotel. "On Aug 4, we asked her to show her health code and cooperate with us in taking temperature. According to local prevention measures, if she did not have nucleic acidreport, we needed to persuade her to return to where she came from. But she refused to show us the health code, which brought huge difficulties and risks for local prevention work," Wu said.

Before the working staff for prevention work arrived at thehomestay hotel, three police officers took on other duties nearby. "These police officers told me that O'Dell seemed to be in a good mood at that time and took pictures of them. To be polite, the officers smiled at her," Wu said.

However, these police officers were later described by O'Dell in her tweets as "creepy" and "Red Rum girls" and asked the Marines to save her from them.

Because she was a foreigner, two police officers from the entry and exit administrationbureau were invited to assist. A total of only eight police officers were on spot, among which three were passing by.

"According to witnesses, working staff for prevention work asked O'Dell to show the health code and she became emotional and even cried and screamed on the site. No police officer nor the working staff had taken anycoercivemeasures on her. No physical contact with her. All the residents, including the owner of the homestay hotel can prove that," Wu said. 
“据目击群众描述，疫情防控人员抵达要求她出示健康码的时候，她情绪变得非常激动，甚至在现场哭闹。但在防疫和执法过程中，警方和疫情防控人员没有采取任何强制措施，没有肢体接触。民宿老板等群众都可以证实。”

O'Dell's remarks have drawnbacklash and some Chinese netizens said she may be suffering from mental problems as her remarks sounded "frantic". Some foreign netizens also noted that the US professor might have studied "creative writing" and "script writing" and these may be the reasons for her exaggerated descriptions on Twitter.
