  • #154 Healing Fatigue After Betrayal: When You’re Both Just Tired

After betrayal, many couples expect the hardest part to be the initial crisis. But what often comes next is something quieter—and just as real: healing fatigue.

In this episode, we talk about what happens when the adrenaline wears off, the urgency fades, and both partners begin to feel emotionally and relationally exhausted.

This episode offers validation, relational clarity, and practical ways for couples to stay engaged in healing without burning out or quietly disconnecting.

You don’t heal betrayal trauma by trying harder—you heal it by creating enough safety to rest.

  • #153 Staying or Leaving After Betrayal — Discernment for Both Partners

After betrayal, one of the most painful questions couples face is: Do we stay… or do we leave?

In this episode, we explore why that question feels so urgent after betrayal—and why clarity rarely comes through forcing a decision. This episode is for couples navigating the messy middle—where nothing is fully resolved yet, but healing is still possible.

Staying is not a lifetime contract. Leaving is not always immediate clarity. Discernment is a process, not a deadline.

  • #152 The Individual Healing That Saved Our Marriage with Chance and Crystal

Today we’re talking about something that can feel counterintuitive when a relationship is in crisis: slowing down and focusing on individual healing first. So many couples rush to fix the relationship, but sometimes the path forward starts with healing me before healing us.

I’m honored to be joined by Chance and Crystal, a couple who share their honest and powerful journey of how individual healing became the foundation for rebuilding trust, connection, and safety in their marriage. Together, we explore why couples work too early didn’t help, what each partner had to face on their own, how trauma responses shaped their relationship, and how nervous system regulation transformed the way they communicate.

Whether you’re a betrayed partner, a betraying partner, or a clinician supporting couples, this episode offers hope, wisdom, and a roadmap for what healing can look like when each person does their own work first.

  • #151 Why Apologies Aren’t Enough to Heal Betrayal Trauma

Why doesn’t an apology fix betrayal trauma? If you’ve experienced infidelity, pornography addiction, or relational betrayal, you may have heard the words “I’m sorry” over and over… and yet still feel unsafe, unsettled, or unable to move forward.

In this episode, we explore a powerful truth:

Apologies matter—but they don’t heal betrayal trauma on their own.

Betrayal trauma isn’t just an emotional wound. It impacts the nervous system, the body, and your ability to trust what’s real. Healing requires more than words—it requires consistency, accountability, emotional presence, and time.

Whether you’re the betrayed partner wondering why you still hurt… or the partner who caused harm feeling confused about what else is needed… this episode will bring clarity, relief, and a grounded path forward.

  • #150 What Accountability Actually Means After Betrayal (And What It Doesn’t)

Accountability is one of the most talked-about — and most misunderstood — parts of betrayal recovery.

For many couples healing after infidelity or sexual betrayal, the word accountability can feel loaded with fear: punishment, humiliation, endless judgment, or never being able to move forward.

But true accountability isn’t about being shamed.

    It’s about becoming trustworthy again.

In this episode of Choosing to Stay, Hali Roderick breaks down what accountability actually means after betrayal trauma, what it doesn’t mean, and why accountability is one of the most essential ingredients in rebuilding safety, trust, and long-term repair.

This conversation is especially powerful for partners who want to do better but don’t know how to stay present with the impact of what they’ve done — and for betrayed partners who are tired of carrying the emotional labor of recovery alone.

  • #148: Don’t Forget the Children: Betrayal Trauma’s Impact on the Family System

Betrayal trauma is often talked about as a couple’s crisis, but betrayal is never contained to the marriage alone.

In this episode, Hali Roderick and her daughter Morgan Ellsworth explore the often-overlooked impact of parental betrayal on children and the entire family system.

As professionals in the betrayal trauma field, and as a mother and daughter who have firsthand experience, they invite listeners into an essential conversation on generational healing, witnessing, and family recovery.

They discuss how children often feel the impact of betrayal in the family, without the truth to give language to their experience. Without support, they often carry confusion, self-blame, and unprocessed grief into adulthood.

Together, they discuss how children often sit in an unaware and disempowered place and why compassionate witnessing, emotional validation, and developmentally appropriate disclosure are essential for restoring agency and safety.

Healing is messy. It is courageous. And it is possible across generations.

  • #147 We’re Both Grieving — But Not the Same Way: How Couples Navigate Grief Together After Betrayal

Grief is one of the most misunderstood parts of betrayal recovery — especially for couples who are choosing to stay.

In this episode, Hali Roderick explores how grief shows up differently for betrayed partners and betraying partners, why couples often feel out of sync in the healing process, and how the APSATS Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model (MPTM) helps couples navigate grief in the post-traumatic growth phase.

You’ll learn why “parallel grief” is normal, how grief becomes a relational stressor, and what healthy shared grieving can actually look like after infidelity and betrayal trauma.

This episode offers practical conversation prompts, trauma-sensitive insight, and hope for couples learning how to stay human together in the aftermath of betrayal.

  • #146 Grief After Betrayal: What Men Lose—and Why It Matters for Healing

Grief after betrayal is rarely talked about—especially when it comes to men.

In this episode, we explore grief after betrayal for men, including men in recovery, men who have caused harm, and men who have betrayed themselves. While grief is often associated with sadness or loss through death, betrayal creates layers of invisible loss that many men carry without language—or permission—to acknowledge.

I’m joined by Joseph McKinley who is a Pastor and Recovery Coach at Greenway Recovery as well as a coaching colleague of mine at Choose Recovery Services, where he supports individuals and families navigating sexual addiction recovery and betrayal trauma. His work focuses on helping men face truth with compassion, integrity, and responsibility—without bypassing the grief that healing requires.

You don’t have to navigate grief, recovery, or betrayal alone. Healing doesn’t start with having the right answers—it starts with naming what’s been lost.

Later this year, the Rise, Renew, Restore Retreat in Costa Rica, happening July 13–18, offers a more spacious, restorative experience focused on slowing down, reconnecting with your body, and healing in the presence of nature and supportive community.

  • #145 Nutrition, Trauma, and Recovery: Using Food as an Ally, Not Another Battleground with Dr. David Wiss

Today’s conversation sits at the intersection of trauma, recovery, and compassion for the body.

Many listeners of Choosing to Stay are navigating betrayal trauma, addiction recovery—either their own or their partner’s—and ongoing nervous system overwhelm. In those seasons, nutrition can either feel like a powerful support… or like one more place we’re falling short.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. David Wiss, a pioneering mental health nutritionist and Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner who bridges nutritional science with psychiatric and addiction care. Dr. Wiss is the founder of Nutrition in Recovery and the Wise Mind Nutrition app, and his work focuses on root-cause healing at the intersection of trauma, substance use, and food-related struggles.

What I appreciate most about Dr. Wiss’s approach is his emphasis on compassion over control, and his understanding of behaviors—not as failures—but as adaptations shaped by stress, trauma, and survival.

Together, we explore how nutrition can gently support healing from trauma and addiction without becoming another source of shame, pressure, or perfectionism.
