Howard Schubiner, MD is an internist and a Clinical Professor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He has authored more than 150 publications in scientific journals and books. He lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally and is the author of Unlearn Your Pain: The Science of Recovering from Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Anxiety and Depression, published by The Open Field/Viking Press. His other books are The Unlearn Your Pain Workbook, The Unlearn Your Anxiety and Depression Workbook, and Hidden From View, written with Dr. Allan Abbass.

Dr. Caroline Zubieta is a third-year anesthesiology resident at the University of Michigan.

She is an Ann Arbor native who received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and subsequently graduated from the UM Medical School and the Ross Business School at the University of Michigan in 2024.

During medical school and now in her 3rd year of residency, Caroline has worked closely with our clinical research team and generally been involved in pain research for the last five years.

More importantly, Caroline is an empathic provider who has a passion for taking care of people with chronic pain.

Dr. Emily Foxen-Craft Scholand is a pediatric pain psychologist in​ her private practice, called Pediatric Pain and Behavioral Health and is located in Southeast Michigan.

Prior to the founding of her clinic, she was a psychologist at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in the pediatric pain clinic and a clinical assistant professor in the ​Department of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Lindsey Delott is an Assistant Professor with joint appointments in Neurology and Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan. She also serves as the Section Lead for Neuro-Ophthalmology at the renowned Kellogg Eye Center. 

Her work focuses on understanding the impact of neurologic and neuro-ophthalmic conditions, such as chronic eye pain, visual phenomena, and optic disorders on her patients’ functioning and well-being. Her pioneering research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and various philanthropic and professional organizations.

Mark C. Bicket, MD, PhD, F.A.S.A  is a pain physician and anesthesiologist at the University of Michigan, where he directs research on pain and opioids and still sees patients every week. His work helped reveal both how over-prescribing opioids after surgery fed the broader crisis and how often pain goes under-treated, and he now runs large real-world studies, designed hand-in-hand with patients, on how to treat pain more safely and humanely.

Dr. Suzanna M. Zick, ND, MPH is a Research Professor in Family Medicine and Nutritional Sciences and Co-Director of the Integrative Family Medicine Program at the University of Michigan. Dr. Zick's research interests include the investigation of the impact and implementation of integrative therapies including whole food diets for control of cancer-related symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbance and quality of life. Dr. Zick is the course director of a National Cancer Institute education grant to teach oncology providers evidence-based integrative therapies.

Dr. Karsten Bartels, MD, PhD, MBA is a health services researcher who also practices anesthesiology and critical care medicine. After his postgraduate training at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Duke University, he completed research training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. 

Karsten is now leading health services research at the University of Michigan, where he holds appointments in three departments:  Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, and Learning Health Sciences.

Yoni K. Ashar, PhD is an assistant professor and director of the Pain and Emotion Research Lab at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology and neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder and an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine. Yoni’s research uses functional MRI brain imaging, natural language processing, and other clinical and computational tools to understand how mind and brain processes influence health, especially chronic pain. A main research focus is investigating a new class of psychological and neuroscience-based treatments aiming for recovery from chronic pain.

Jonathan Bittner, LAPC, MS, CTP is a US Army Combat Veteran of the war in Afghanistan. He holds a master’s degree in clinical and counseling psychology and is in the fourth year of the Doctor of Psychology program at Immaculata University. As an associate professional counselor in the state of Pennsylvania, his work focuses on providing care for adults and teens with trauma. Dr. Rachel Bergmans, PhD, MPH is the Administrative Director of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center.  In addition, she is also a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology. Her background is in epidemiology and public health, with research spanning integrative medicine, social determinants of health, chronic pain, mental well-being, and community engaged science. 

Dr. Bergmans has worked across a variety of environments, from academic collaborations in Madison, Wisconsin, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, participatory programs with veterans and lupus advocates, to educational and health-focused initiatives in Thailand and Zambia.
