  • What Is Being Adopted Like? The Struggles of Identity, Family and Acceptance with Sarah Reinhardt and Louise Browne

Did you know that between 1945 and 1973, four (4) million US mothers put their children up for adoption?

As an adoptee and in honor of National Adoption Month, I wanted to bring light to the false narrative around adoption. Adoption is more than just a legal process; it's a life-altering journey that can deeply, influence our sense of identity, the way we perceive belonging, and how we connect or don't connect with others.

These are issues I've struggled with and so have my two guests today, Sarah and Louise. Adoption is complex and there are ripple effects it has on adoptees, and their families, and can change lives directly and indirectly.

In today's episode, I speak with Sarah Reinhardt and Louise Browne, hosts of “Adoption: The Making of Me” podcast. One of the top-rated podcasts on adoption!!

    We dive deep and discuss:

    • What is the Baby Scoop Era?
    • Sarah and Louise’s intimate adoption stories and how it has affected them.
    • The effects adoption has on self-worth and feelings of guilt.
    • The trauma of being separated at birth from your birthmother and how it shows up in adult relationships.
    • The challenges of being adopted and how it can increase your chances of having anxiety, addiction, mental health issues, or being incarcerated.
    • Why adoptees need open and honest conversations.
    • How having the right support group or community can impact an adoptee.

Sarah and Louise also share their invaluable insights and reflections from their 4 seasons of “Adoption: The Making of Me” podcast. Including the importance of the industry and its multidimensional impact on our society.

  • 5 Reasons Why You Should Give Yourself Permission To Do What You Want and Desire. Let this Be Your Permission Slip.

Have you ever felt guilty for doing something that brings you pure happiness just because?  Or do you feel guilty because you feel like you should be doing something productive instead?

Permitting myself to do what I desire has been a personal challenge, but I know the benefits outweigh the consequences. There are many reasons why we don’t permit ourselves, but this is your opportunity to reexamine that, so you can begin to prioritize your happiness and connect to what feeds your soul.

I’m sharing this episode because I had to learn the hard way and I don’t want you to experience what I did!!! In addition, with all that’s going on in the world YOU need to honor what you need now more than ever!!

    Today I’ll talk about:

    • The consequences I faced when I didn’t give myself permission and how you can learn from my mistakes.
    • The 3 main reasons why we don’t give ourselves permission to do the things we want or desire.
    • Examples of small and big permissions. This can include a variety of things and is very individual.
    • The 5 benefits of giving yourself a permission slip. Hint: Doing so can bring you more happiness and joy.
    • Wait until the end for a 10-minute exercise that includes a body scan so you can tap into your wants and desires, and reveal any hidden barriers holding you back.

This is your permission slip to change your relationship with yourself so you can find more happiness and joy because it’s what we all need right now.

So give yourself permission to grab some tea, pop in those earbuds, and get cozy so you can tap into your wants and desires and learn how to do more of what lights you up and feeds your soul.

    I’m with you!

    Laurie

Have you ever caught yourself wondering why your mind and body are out of sync? Or do you let your thoughts control your decisions instead of tuning into your body and listening to what it’s communicating to you?

Our society has taught us to think our way through life instead of tuning into our body's senses. My episode on “Your Body’s Wisdom and How You Can Improve Your Well-Being Today” is an introduction to this episode, so if you haven’t listened, you may want to start there.

    • Why it’s important to listen to our bodies.
    • How our thoughts impact our nervous system.

Do you find yourself in the challenging position of caring for aging parents or loved ones? Maybe you have siblings that do see eye to eye with how to manage all that needs to be done and you feel alone.

The emotional rollercoaster and overwhelming responsibilities can take its toll on your well-being.

I know because I’ve been there. I oversaw my parents care for 14 ½ years, raised my four girls, while my marriage crumbled in front of me. It wasn’t easy and I struggled through those years. That’s why I’m having this conversation with Tamara McClintock Greenberg, PsyD, MS and author of multiple books including, The Complex PTSD Coping Skills Workbook and When Someone You Love Has A Chronic Illness.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The layered challenges of caregiving for our loved ones.
    • Why you should seek emotional support and ask for help from family members or friends when caring for aging parents or those with a chronic illness.
    • 5 ways to ease your load if you are part of the generation that wasn’t raised to ask for help.
    • Why sleep and exercise are more important when you are the caregiver.
    • How to find more balance while caregiving.
    • The importance of planning for the future, both yours and your loved ones.
    • The complexities of sibling relationships while caregiving and why this isn’t the time to ask for what you didn’t receive emotionally when you were a child.
    • Why clear communication and boundaries are more important than ever.

If you’re taking care of loved ones right now, please stick around because this awesome episode is for you!

  • Your Body's Wisdom and How You Can Improve Your Well-Being Today

Have you ever paused to listen to the wisdom of your body? If not, you should because it’s sending you messages constantly.

I have to confess, I haven’t always been attuned to the wisdom of my body and I had to learn the hard way. I was stressed and I knew it, but I didn’t know how to back out of all my commitments, but my body did. It shut down and I ended up in the hospital, not once, but twice.

That’s why I’m sharing today’s episode…so you can begin to listen to your body or deepen your existing relationship with it.

If you think this is woo-woo, stay with me because this is science-backed. Neurologists and therapists are also chiming in with research on the wisdom of our bodies.

It's a different way of thinking about self-care and healing. It’s also a dialect we often overlook until we pay the price emotionally, physically, or both.

    What you’ll learn today:

    • My personal story of not listening to my body, the price I paid, and what I changed in my life.
    • Why you should listen to the wisdom of your body.
    • Who is Martha Beck? And why she created “The Body Compass.”
    • How yoga was the gateway for me to get in touch with my body and how research shows it can help with regulating the nervous system and developing more self-awareness.
    • My introduction to somatic-based therapies and how they helped me fully recover from my freaky illness, regulate my nervous system, and heal my past trauma.
    • How I decided to become a somatic healer.

So pop in those earbuds and get comfortable, so you can learn how the body's wisdom can become your guide toward a more balanced, healthy, and happy life from the inside out! You deserve this!

And take a listen to the added exercises so you can get more in touch with your body's wisdom too!

    Laurie
