  • Our Search for Understanding on the Journey of Healing Childhood Trauma

This episode originally aired on YouTube. The link mentioned is further down in the description

Coping mechanisms… we all use them. Unfortunately, most of us tend to cope in fairly unhealthy ways which often leads to a lot of shame.

One of my most watched videos, month after month, is one from 9 years ago. I get emails often from people who find it helpful in making sense of their behavior or choices. With this understanding, we can begin to release shame and practice self-compassion.

This is part of the reason we need to understand things about our experiences and the impact it has.

In today’s episode, I share more on the importance of understanding how we, as survivors, use awareness and understanding for healing.

  • Why Can’t I Heal Childhood Trauma on My Own?

This episode originally aired on YouTube.

If you’re like most people I know, you’ve likely felt frustrated at times thinking about “having” to work with a therapist (or other professional) in order to heal. I have certainly felt this in my own journey.

A few reasons might be because of time, resources, or fear… fear of judgment, abandonment, shame, or any number of other things.

This leads to one of the legacies of interpersonal childhood trauma which is a strong sense of independence. The idea that we can, should, or need to do things on our own, not burden other people, and likely, that we can’t trust someone to help us.

As much as we might like it to be possible to heal on our own, there are many reasons it just doesn’t allow us to heal at a deep, core level.

It’s one of the reasons the “self-help” industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. People continue to search for the tip, trick, or theory that will “finally” get them to where they want to be.

While it may help for a while, inevitably, the struggle returns. This isn’t a fault or failure within you.

In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on why this is the case and how the “why” is part of the healing itself.

A personal message to all of you incredible, courageous humans. ❤️

Choosing to listen to podcasts related to things most people don’t want to talk about because of the discomfort it brings, is a representation of your openness and, yes, courage.

I’ve said it thousands (hundreds of thousands? 😉) of times, healing happens in connection and there is so much healing that comes from connecting with others with whom you know “get it”.

  • How Childhood Trauma Affects Mental Health

This episode originally aired on YouTube.

In recent years, it’s undoubtedly that mental health has become a widely discussed and prevalent topic. People started to create more conversations around it and a result more people are aware of it and they try to understand it which is a great thing specially for us, childhood trauma survivors. However, the way we talk about mental health may not always be accurate.

In today’s episode, I answer a question about the relationship of childhood trauma and mental illness.

When we experience childhood trauma, we are left to deal with it’s lasting impact in our lives. And although childhood trauma is not a mental illness, it affects us in different aspects of our being and ultimately our mental health.

It's important to remember that each of our journey is unique and how we cope with childhood trauma can be different from each other. But no matter how different we are on the ways that we react to our traumas, we are still very much the same. Remember that healing is possible, and we will heal together.

  • The Many Masks of Childhood Trauma and How They Affect Healing

This episode originally aired on YouTube. The link mentioned is further down in the description

We all do it. Sometimes it’s deliberate and sometimes we aren’t aware at all…

We may have several masks we wear depending on who we’re around or how we believe we “should” behave.

There’s the mask of smiles or humor. The mask of confidence or independence. The mask of perfectionism or containment. The mask of being “fine” or happy. The list goes on.

There are times they can be quite helpful in our lives, like when we need to compartmentalize or protect ourselves from disapproving reactions to what lies under the mask.

But, these masks become such a “normal” part of how we show up, that we lose touch with who we are underneath… the truth of who we are.

And, the people we have in our lives only get to know the mask we choose to show them.

The path to healing requires connection. We can only be truly connected when we allow our true selves to be seen.

In today’s episode, I share more about how and why we wear the masks, the impact it has on our sense of self and our relationships, and how to begin to release the need to wear them.

  • How Healing Childhood Trauma Changes the Nature of Your Relationships

This episode originally aired on YouTube.

Relationships can be challenging for everyone. For survivors of childhood trauma there are additional factors that can make it more difficult to cultivate the relationships you desire… and deserve.

How do you learn to trust when you’ve been hurt or let down by people you care about or trust? How can you identify and create healthy boundaries if the people around you don’t respect them? How do you know who to turn to for support?

It can feel impossible at times to trust that all this is possible for you if you’ve not yet been able to experience it.

This is often one of the reasons people give up on healing.

In this episode, I share how and why we find ourselves here and how healing naturally shifts your relationships.

  • Embracing the Messy Middle Through the Journey of Healing Childhood Trauma

This episode originally aired on YouTube.

Navigating feelings, desires, needs, and decisions can be difficult for most people, at least at times.

For many childhood trauma survivors, it can create significant anxiety and/or self-doubt.

One of the reasons is because we tend to think of many things as black and white. This includes how we believe we “should” or “shouldn’t” feel, do, think, etc.

Much of healing is being able to practice holding space for ourselves in the middle.

One area in which this can be particularly challenging is navigating the relationship and feelings with someone who has hurt us.

In this episode,I share how it all can show up and how to navigate through it.

Did you see the interview Drew Barrymore had with Brooke Shields in which they talked about sexual abuse and exploitation? It is a beautiful example of the healing power of vulnerable conversations.

In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on their recent conversation on The Drew Barrymore Show and what it can mean for all of us as we continue to heal and reduce the shame and stigma of what it means to be a survivor.
