In 2017, Award-winning Washington Post columnist, Steven Petrow experienced one of the worst years of his life. He lost both his parents, separated from his husband, and learned that his sister had meta-static cancer. He began to question: how can one find joy during incredibly difficult times? He discovered that joy is not only around us, but within us.
He examines this and so much more in his book THE JOY YOU MAKE: Find the Silver Linings--Even on Your Darkest Days, released this September. He explores the many expressions of joy and shows readers how to find, cultivate, and share it. Combining his personal experiences with research and expert interviews, Petrow asks (and answers) the question: “What if there was a way to find the joy in everything?”
In today’s episode, we discuss how the connection between joy and grief are inseparable, and Steven offers practical, prescriptive advice to find the joy around us. We think this is a perfect episode and book for any season of life, but especially the upcoming holiday season – and hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did!

On this episode, we welcome psychologist and winter expert Kari Leibowitz who is the author of the new book: ‘HOW TO WINTER: Harness Your Mindset to Thrive on Cold, Dark, or Difficult Days.’ Kari uses mindset science to help readers embrace winter as a season to be enjoyed, not endured and in turn, learn powerful lessons that can impact our mental well-being throughout the year.
Inspired by cutting-edge psychological and behavioral science research, HOW TO WINTER provides readers with concrete tools for making winter wonderful wherever you live and harnessing the power of small mindset changes with big impact to help embrace every season of life. In this episode, Kari discusses an overview of what seasonal affective disorder is and isn't - what to look out for, and what to do if you simply have the "winter blues.” She shares how people can embrace the clock change in the fall, take advantage of darkness, and celebrate the
beginning of winter. She also shares specific actions people can take to get ready for winter physically and how to refresh your home for winter comfort and joy. We found this conversation really helpful as we enter the darker months and hope you gain as much from the conversation as we did.

Career coach Megan Hellerer has become known as the “Conscious Career Coach,” working with clients including journalists, lawyers, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, a Fortune 30 Under 30 tech founder, the editor-in-chief of a major lifestyle magazine, and Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
She offers a culmination of over a decade of learning, training, and coaching in her new book, DIRECTIONAL LIVING; A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life, released on September 24th. In DIRECTIONAL LIVING, Hellerer presents a new way of thinking about our lives, one that turns away from the voices telling us what a good life “should” look like, and instead relies on cultivating our own inner navigation. Through Hellerer’s revolutionary plan, we can get unstuck in our careers or even transform them, move from misery to meaning, and find the work we are meant to be doing in the world.
