Create Social Capital and Self-Esteem with the Five Human Needs Theory

Listen Later

There are five categories of human needs that dictate our interactions and behavior, and social and communication skills are important for meeting many of these needs.

Good social skills will help you meet your need for belonging by forming strong relationships with others. Communication skills can help you meet your need for social status and esteem by expressing yourself effectively and building confidence.

In addition, social and communication skills will help you meet your need for self-actualization by interacting with others and sharing your ideas. This allows you to learn and grow, which leads to a greater sense of self-fulfillment.

Some specific examples of how social and communication skills can help you build your social status include::

  • Physiological needs: Social skills can help you meet your need for access to resources and support, like group and 1:1 coaching, therapy, and classes.
  • Safety needs: Social skills can help you meet your need for safety by providing you with a sense of belonging and security.
  • Belonging needs: Social skills are essential for meeting the need for belonging. People who are able to form strong relationships with others are more likely to feel accepted. This leads to a greater sense of happiness and well-being.
  • Esteem needs: Communication skills can help you meet your need for esteem by allowing you to express yourself effectively and build confidence. This can lead to a greater sense of self-worth and confidence.
  • Self-actualization needs: Social and communication skills will help you meet your need for self-actualization by allowing you to learn and grow. This leads to a greater sense of self-fulfillment and meaning in life.
