We have a project that our design center just completed, which is actually right here in Utah, but we’re not going to say where the location is. You would think this house was in LA or Las Vegas with its really high end finishes and very contemporary, fashion driven, and opinionated. They had the greatest private fashion collection we have ever seen before, the closet being the biggest one we have ever done here at Alice Lane, but they are very private people, so we’re going to tell you what we saw and what we did on this episode today. All of us here at Alice Lane take luxury in doses, and Suzanne Hall is doing that this very moment as she is in the middle of her own remodel in her bathroom, creating achievable interiors on the fly. We had a listener question and they asked how Jess and Suz became such good friends, so we thought it would be really fun to focus on that story in this episode. We’ve had bits of this story come up throughout our podcast, but never all in one like this one today. Jess tells her story about starting Alice Lane Interiors and how it came about, and then how Suzanne came into the picture after they fired their first interior designer who just wasn’t working out. We used to move a lot of furniture to people’s homes and set it all up for them to see how it looked and usually clients would love it and take the deal, but every now and then we’d have someone who just didn’t like it and would send it all back, which was a big pain for us, but it was all part of the learning process. “Find people that you honestly love to work with, so that it doesn’t feel like work.” “Passion is contagious.”

“We had so much fun and we would just be in our heels and our dresses just scooting furniture and seeing what worked best, thinking about the person’s personal things and drawing, sketching things out, and it really became a design laboratory. We would work the floor and help people from 10-7, and then the doors shut down and it was like Cinderella’s mice just scurrying about trying to put together this thing because they’re coming into the store the next day and we’re gonna show them what we’ve put together for them.” 7:28

One of our listeners asked the question of how someone can lean into the Spanish Colonial style of home, so we have created this podcast for those who have moved into a decades old home and aren’t sure about how to lean into its style. We wanted to do a quick little history lesson and talk about 5 principle things that are included in Spanish Colonial architecture, and then why certain celebrity estates are successful and why each of them look different because they each have a fresh new take.

Houses in this style Incorporate key elements of Mediterranean architecture, especially bright white exterior walls while also taking inspiration from Mexican, pueblo, and moorish design styles. The architectural style represents an adaptation of Spanish missions and Mediterranean style homes designed to keep the interior cool even on hot days. In the United States, Spanish revival homes are most popular in Florida, Texas, California, and the Southwest, including Arizona and New Mexico.” 8:20

We wanted to discuss something that pops up a lot in the different magazines we’re reading, social media, and we feel like we need to talk about and unpack it here. The trend, or lifestyle, is called quiet luxury and some people refer to it as stealth wealth, which means you’re really quiet about your luxury and actually looking like millionaires, and not trying to drip so hard or wearing all the labels all at once. There’s a way to use the right materials in a way that isn’t shouting flashy, but still shines excellence and luxury.
