Today we have an exciting episode – a recording of the sold-out Live Show I did recently with comedy, camp, cabaret superstar Reuben Kaye! This episode is unlike others. It was recorded in front of a live audience, with a man under the age of 40 and it totally went off the rails. It was a special for IDAHOBIT day – the international day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. And it’s bloody fabulous!

Reuben and I talk about his early dating days, his experiences at school as a boy ahead of his time (that bit will make you cry). We talked some of his sexual preferences, his sexcapades and he poked at fun at me, whilst I laughed at him. (I told him off once or twice too). Reuben is just wonderful. He was hilarious – side-splittingly so – but also raw and vulnerable. I am pretty sure he went places he doesn’t usually go in interviews and man; we were the beneficiaries.

A trigger warning: it’s probably the best part of the episode but we do get into intergenerational trauma and there’s some discussion of suicide.

And Bonus – writer, creator and singer of the Dear Nelly theme song, Casey Bennetto sings the theme song live.

Today we have our second return co-host - the one and only Jo Stanley. Jo joined us for episode 10 on 23rd March and talked us through her late start to dating, her early(ish) marriage and making it work through the trials and tribulations of life, love, alcohol, date nights and kids. In this episode Jo asks me about how to support friends through divorce and separation. Steve and I met when I was working on ABC radio and I instantly adored him – he’s open, honest, humble and vulnerable in a way that many professionals at that level seem to struggle to be. Steve was married young, has one child and was divorced in middle age. He took time to recover and then started dating on the apps in his late 40s. And bloody loved it. For the most part. He’s now late 50’s and in a relationship with an woman he met on the apps and I have to say, they have the MOST FASCINATING first date story you will ever hear. Steve is bright, open, funny and a nice mix of earnest and slightly jaded – right in my wheelhouse. Today we are joined by Cath Davis. Unlike many of my guests, Cath is not in showbiz. She’s a proper bone fide civilian with a normal job. Cath is a professional middle aged woman with a background in policy, unionism and education. She’s long-term single, has a bunch of mates, loves her family and career and is not interested in a relationship unless it value-adds. Bravo to her.

Cath and I talk about being in your 40s and long-term single and what that’s like. We have a particularly moving exchange about how it feels to “not give” your parents grandkids. We talk about loving your own space and how you can learn from unsatisfying/inadequate/bad relationships in your twenties that you deserve more and, that you can build a happy life on your own. I also honour how great it is to have mates like Cath who have the energy, willingness and time to help out with - and enjoy - everyone else's offspring. Yes she's THAT FRIEND.

We also take some great listener calls on celebrating single life and also, a pretty niche but relevant call on whether the word “misogynist” is over-used which, in turn, prompts a chat about the co-opting of terms like gaslighting and other dating terminology – are they overused (I reckon they might be)?
