When you first hear about his betrayal, when you discover it for yourself, or you have the evidence presented to you, it can overwhelm you to the point of shutdown. Shock and denial kick in. You are in total disbelief.
This is a natural response to something that has caused you immense emotional pain.
Denial is a form of self protection. It keeps you from having to face the brutal reality of his betrayal.
