An Emsolation Extra Interview

Today Em sits down to chat with someone who she says has “taught me more in the last year than anyone”. Their name is Sonny Jane Wise, they are an advocate, public speaker and author of the Neurodiversity Friendly Workbook of DBT Skills and the new book ‘We’re All Neurodiverse’. Their mission is to challenge neuronormativity and build a neurodiversity affirming future, where neurodivergent folks are no longer labelled as disordered. This is part one of a fascinating chat that covers everything from Sonny’s early diagnosis in the 90’s, to the difficulties of their childhood, what it was that encouraged them to choose the life of an advocate and a boundary pusher, and why the creation of capitalism is to blame for creating the neuronormative society all of us are expected to fit into. Get ready for a bunch of mind blowing moments that are bound to challenge and even aggravate you, but all of it is so fascinating and educational, you really will get a LOT out of this conversation.

It’s our final episode of the year, so we are pretty much stumbling towards the finish line, you’ll find Em and Michael connecting up from their homes as Em recovers from Covid. We begin by referencing the fact that the second series of Michael’s ABC-TV series ‘The Newsreader’ has scooped a MASSIVE 15 AACTA Award nominations for next year's ceremony. Then it’s onto Em and Michael’s experience watching ‘Saltburn’, the black comedy starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, that’s been labelled “deeply disturbing” and has left a lot of people trying to remember what their life was like before seeing it. They weren’t as impressed or disturbed, but apparently the visuals are worth the effort. Finally, Em has been doing home haircuts on Elio and she’s also discovered the joys of a salt float. Not in a self described “death mermaid shells”, more a small pool in a private room scenario, and let’s just say it was LIFE. CHANGING. So settle in for much hilarity, a hint of exhaustion and the usual such and such you’ve grown to love.

Shoe’s loosened & Dua Lipa t-shirt on, we begin this episode with 2 things that have annoyed Em and both are tied to lazy journalism and click baiting. The first involves former Superman actor Dean Cain, the second, the creepy reporting of the recent AFLW Best and Fairest 2023 Awards. After that it’s props and a ‘Good For Her’ Award for Dolly Parton’s choice of a Dallas Cheerleaders outfit for her NFL Halftime Thanksgiving performance. Then we get to witness Micheal squirm as we delve into the reviews for Baz Luhrman’s TV series ‘Faraway Downs’, a reworking of the ‘Australia’ movie, now streaming on Disney+. The highlight, Michael being forced to review it and arriving at it being Hugh Jackman’s hottest moment on screen and a bunch of other equally beige and non committal observations. There is much pressing of the RuPaul Shade button. Finally, we move onto Barbra Streisand’s tell all ‘My Name Is Barbra’, Michael has finished it and is ready to offer up his final thoughts. Plus Em and Michael stumbled on Barbra’s 1986 concert filmed in the gardens of her Malibu mansion, to an audience of the 80’s most elite celebrities. There’s SO MUCH to unpack and it’s glorious in all the most delightfully delusional ways Barbra is famous for, bless.

Yeah we are going there, Ghost Diana will be covered, but first we need to talk about Michael’s brand new hairdo, it’s blonde, it’s shocking and Em is not able to process it. After that, Michael updates us on hour 33 of the Barbra Streisand tell all ‘My Name Is Barbra’. Michael has also had a VERY interesting encounter with Kerri-Anne Kennerley thanks to his TV series ‘The Newsreader’. Em reveals what Jamie Lynn Spears has been up to since adopting the role of a celebrity in a jungle that they will eventually wanna get out of. Plus there’s a mental side quest into who Reese Witherspoon is currently dating, yes its apparently Kevin Costner. Finally, we need to talk about the appearance of Ghost Diana in the final season of the documentary ‘The Crown’, she’s back and she’s spooky and she makes no sense whatsoever, hence much discussion must be had.
