Before I dive into today’s topic, let me share a quick story.

It was the Chinese New Year of 2013. I flew to the U.S. for my MBA admissions interview. My interviewer was a second-year Michigan Ross MBA student—a tall, good-looking American guy. Toward the end of the interview, right before it was my turn to ask him questions, he suddenly leaned forward and said: “Before I let you ask me questions, I have one last question for you.”

I smiled: “Sure!”

He said: “Where did you pick up your English? I mean… you don’t have an accent at all! Did you go to an international school growing up?”

I answered: “No. Public school all the way till I graduated from high school.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Interesting… some of my foreign friends who grew up in the States don’t speak as well as you do. That’s impressive!”

And I just said with a big smile: “Thank you, sir!” �

That was just one example. Ever since college, many of my classmates and friends in the U.S. often told me the same thing—they didn’t realize I wasn’t American until later, because my English didn’t give me away.

So today, I want to share the real story behind this: how I, as a second-language speaker, actually learned English.
