Dr. Dan interviews Rabbi Steve Leder about life, grief, love, suffering, and legacy. Newsweek Magazine twice named him one of the ten most influential rabbis in America but most important to Steve is being a husband and a dad.
Steve Leder is the senior rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, one of the largest synagogues in the world. He is the author of five books including the new For You When I Am Gone: Twelve Essential Questions to Tell a Life Story.
In today's interview (and in his new book), Rabbi Steve suggests that too often we focus on the material things in life when what we really should consider is the legacy we leave – our values, beliefs, hopes and dreams. Tombstones rarely say "she had a beautiful set of pearls" and instead say "Loving Mother" or similar sentiments.
Dr. Dan and Rabbi Leder agree we should be talking to our loved ones about what we want to be, who we were, what we want for our children/loved ones/friends and family in their lives, and what legacy we want to leave.
