Dr Uma Naidoo is a psychiatrist, author and specialist in nutritional psychiatry.
She was considered Harvard’s Mood-Food expert, has been featured in the Wall Street Journal.
Her work explores an increasingly important question at the intersection of nutrition and mental health: what role, if any, does what we eat play in how we think and feel?
In this conversation, we explore the emerging science connecting diet, the brain and mental health. We discuss what researchers are learning about nutrition and mood, the relationship between physical and psychological health, and the challenges involved in translating nutritional research into practical recommendations.
We also discuss different approaches to eating, including highly restrictive diets, the foods Uma chooses to prioritise in her own diet, and how she thinks about the relationship between nutrition and conventional approaches to mental healthcare.
Nutrition is only one of many factors that may influence mental health, and dietary changes should not be regarded as a replacement for appropriate psychological or medical treatment.
