Today on the show, I’m joined by one of the most prominent advocates for plant-based nutrition, Dr Neal Barnard.
At the centre of our conversation is a deceptively simple question: is a whole-food, plant-based diet optimal for human health?
Dr Barnard is President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, founder of the Barnard Medical Center, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He has conducted research examining the role of nutrition in type 2 diabetes and has written extensively about the relationships between diet, metabolism, hormones and long-term health.
Nutrition is also a field in which evidence, identity and strongly held beliefs can easily become entangled. So this conversation is not intended to prescribe a particular way of eating. Instead, it is an opportunity to hear Dr Barnard make the scientific case for the dietary approach he has spent much of his career studying and advocating.
We explore some fascinating questions. What does the evidence actually tell us about plant-based diets? What is the relationship between diet and erectile function? Should people be concerned about soy and breast cancer? What might nutrition mean for our risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease? And how do diet and hormones interact across the lifespan?
Whatever your own dietary choices, there is plenty here to think about.
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Dr Neal Barnard.Links:https://www.youtube.com/c/FreedomPact (video interviews)https://freedompact.co.uk/newsletter (Healthy, Wealthy & Wise)https://instagram.com/freedompacthttps://nealbarnard.org
