Private Practice Success Stories

From School SLP to Small Town Private Practitioner with Sarah Desimone

Listen Later

Have you ever thought about starting a private practice as a school SLP or as someone who lives in a more rural area?

This is the perfect student success story for you to listen to!

Sarah Desimone, MS, CCC-SLP is the owner of Huckleberry Therapy LLC, located in Athol, ID. Since graduating in 2016, Sarah has had the opportunity to serve children from birth to age 17 in a large multidisciplinary clinic, through her local school district, and via teletherapy as a contract SLP. It was through these experiences that she felt she had gained the knowledge, experience, and confidence to start her own practice.

Since then, Sarah has resigned from her 90+ student caseload in her local district, accepted a part-time SLP position with a charter school, increased hours at her private practice, and been able to spend more time with her husband and two young children.

In this interview, Sarah talks about how she built her private practice on the side of her job in the schools and how she loves knowing that she's serving the community who would otherwise be stuck on a waitlist or commuting a long distance to get speech therapy.

In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

  • How to move past procrastination
  • Why it’s important to talk to others that believe in you
  • How to navigate building your practice on the side
  • Why it’s okay to start out slow and get your feet wet
  • The benefits of being a practitioner in a rural area
  • How to stay confident in your skills and expertise

I love Sarah’s energy, her commitment to her community, and how she created a private practice that works for her family and herself!

As a student of the Start Your Private Practice Program, Sarah talks about how she received the information that she needed to start her business along with invaluable ongoing support.
