  • Toxic people and how are judgements of others affect our interactions, Ep 43

In this week's episode we discuss the spirituality side of relationships in regards to how our judgments of others affect the relationships we have with them.

Our three pillars of our addiction recovery are gratitude, humility, and integrity.

Are the relationships in your life lining up with the new person you are becoming and striving to become each day?

    • Would you rather be right or would you rather connect?

As humans, we are in a constant state of comparison, and the way we relate to ourselves, other people, and our past holds all the weight in how we will connect with ourselves and everyone we come in contact with.

Whether we are building people up or putting them down, either way, it is not healthy - it's imperative we build a strategy to see ourselves as equal to others and encompass that equal-ness when we interact with them.

Judgments are not always about putting people down - we can build them up too - and that pedestaling of ourselves or someone else breaks the connection we could have. It alters the relationship in a way where someone feels better about themselves while the other person is made to feel less than in comparison.

  • Overcome mental limitations by accepting responsibility for your choices, Ep #42

In this week's episode, we discuss how your mental limitations are holding you back from achieving your goals in life. With the new year and new decade fast approaching - it's time we look at what is happening in our minds that is holding us back from our best life.

We can't accept responsibility and blame someone else at the same time. That's not how we empower ourselves or take personal responsibility. Even when bad things happen we have the ability to choose how we respond - thus giving us the power over the circumstance/event.

By putting an emphasis on our physical development we learn to break through plateaus and mental barriers we have placed in front of ourselves. When we learn to break through these perceived limitations physically, it actually teaches us to break through them mentally. This works the other way too. If we break through mentally, we learn we can also achieve physically.

It's all mental reinforcement. If you set out to accomplish something, the action of starting is what produces the momentum and the motivation - not the other way around. Motivation will not come until the action is started or the act of not acting brings about consequences that have to be dealt with right then and there.

I imagine many of us got into sobriety because the consequences finally caught up to us and we had no choice but to get into the action of sobering up.

It's time to take back the power. Over our minds, our bodies, our emotions, our spiritual practice - everything. Say it with me..."I have the power!"

  • Strengthen your relationships through adventures, Ep 41

In this week's episode we discuss why physically going and experiencing events with those closest to you is of the utmost importance. You can't just hide in your house, away from all the triggers, and expect to live any kind of life. Get together with your support system and plan an excursion that will open your mind and eyes to the very real fact that you can go places sober where you once only went wasted.

I just got back from a 3-day Phish run and it was amazing. I spent a lot of time "dipping my toe" back in the scenes where I used to get my most plastered. It takes time to systematically desensitize yourself from thinking you can't go to the events and places you once did without being intoxicated.

Everyone has their own journey, everyone must decide what they can never do again and what they desire to experience again - just in a new state of mind.

Here are some things to ask yourself about the ones you want to experience life with the most:

    1. Whom do you have in your corner?
  • How are you connecting with them?
  • What ways do you bond?
  • How are you maintaining activity with them?

    • How is this a part of your sobriety?
  • What is important to you?
  • Why are you giving your time?
  • What if things go well or sideways?

  • Embrace and personify Integrity, Humility & Gratitude, Ep 40

Ep #40 - In this week's episode we cover how integrity, humility, and gratitude have become the three pillars of my addiction recovery and how you can step into these wonderfully powerful states of being today and on into the new year and new decade.

My therapist has gently nudged me into the direction of running all of my actions through these three states so I can identify if my actions are congruent with my new found belief structure. I can not always say that they do, but I strive to be the best version of myself every day - so being able to recognize where my actions aren't lining up with the promises I have made to myself is extremely powerful.

Sit down with some paper and ask yourself where you have displayed a great version of integrity, humility, and gratitude this year and where you would like to do better next year and throughout the next decade.

    **Integrity**

    noun

    - adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

    - the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished:
    - to preserve the integrity of the empire.
    - a sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition:
the integrity of a ship's hull.

    **Humility**

    noun

    - the quality or condition of being humble; modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc.

    **Gratitude**

    noun

    - the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful:

He expressed his gratitude to everyone on the staff.

  • Relationships & emotions: Together we will conquer, Ep 39

In this weeks episode we cover the Relationship sphere and the Relationship component in hopes we can uncover new and better ways to deal with our emotions and how to relate to others that have no idea what the hell we're feeling - and we may not know what we're feeling either, lolol.

One of my main issues is that I have been feeling things, my self, my relationships - everything in between, through this stunted and hazed set of goggles for so long I am not sure how to put my feelings into words, let alone feel them.

Addiction recovery is tough. Now bring others into the mix, which, you know, is gonna happen in life, and it becomes that much more layered and confusing. Here are my not so genius ways to start the process of connecting without substances.

     - Verbalize your feelings to the person in front of you.

     - When playing mental gymnastics, meaning you are running countless scenarios in your head, verbalize the thought process you are going through to the person/people involved.

     - Be willing to hear someone else's opinion, thoughts, and/or feelings on a subject and don't get emotionally triggered when they don't agree with you.

       - When emotionally triggered, breathe deep, and think to yourself how you would feel if you expressed yourself to someone and they just shut you down without hearing you out.

     - Realize it's gonna take a lot of time, effort and work to get your emotional mind right - don't worry, you have time, and best of all - you are sober.

    Tips to dating an addict:

    • We do not process emotions the way others do.
  • We do not prioritize people, places, events, etc. the way others do.
  • We do not know how to verbalize my emotions.
  • We are not broken, just bruised.
  • We can figure this out - it's just gonna take a lot of time.
  • Our beliefs and values about dating and relationships will be based on my memories and those memories are f*cked up.
  • Come to think of it - this list might be most people, not just those of us in addiction recovery.

  • Ground your thoughts, feelings & emotions in facts not opinions, Ep 38

Ep #38 - Your emotional growth is crucial in your addiction recovery. Often our inability to handle our emotions in a healthy way is what led us down the path where addiction gripped us. This is why I focus myself on grounding my emotions in facts not opinions.

This is how I do it and how you can too. Being mindful that you create the thoughts and feelings that draw you into certain directions and into the actions that create your life results - you can take control of your mind and be in charge of your inner-voice and outer responses to what others do around you and what you your self do.

Here is the self-coaching model popularized to me by Brooke Castillo.

Circumstance - the facts about what happened

Thoughts - created from the circumstance

Feelings - triggered by your thoughts

Actions - driven by your feelings and emotions

Results - the culmination of the thoughts, feelings, and actions all sparked by the circumstance (an event, or outside trigger)

Check out the episode from my life coach Brooke Castillo where she talks about the life coaching model I cover in this episode. I like the way I talk about it but she is the master for which I listen to with intent and purpose.

  • You are in charge of how your body looks, feels, and operates, Ep 37

In this episode, we discuss the Self sphere and the physical component. The Self/Physical quadrant is one of my more requested episodes and a perfect way to begin our year/decade end/beginning series.

You are in charge of your body. You stepped into sobriety looking to radically change your life - for whatever reason - and as the year ends one of the most popular resolutions is to get in better shape, lose weight, and/or eat healthily.

Everyone has something about themselves they aren't happy with or thrilled about when they look in the mirror. Getting in better shape and/or eating a more healthy diet are not these gigantic Big, Hairy, Audacious goals so many books and magazines convince you they are.

They can't sell books and magazines if they don't get you believing you can't achieve your desires without them.

Here's my simple flow to get up and on the go toward a healthier you.

Set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

These Four Forces drive you toward achievement: Fear, Frustrations, Wants, and Aspirations.

Listen to the episode all the way through for some Boom-Shakalaka wisdom at the end.

  • The needs you must meet in your addiction recovery, Ep 34

Meeting the critical needs in life will allow you to grow in your sobriety & recovery. Physiological, Safety, Love & Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization are the five levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Know where you're at and focus there.

    Physiological Needs:

Maslow considered physiological needs to be the most essential of our needs. If someone is lacking in more than one need, they’re likely to try to meet these physiological needs first.

    Safety Needs:

Once people’s physiological requirements are met, the next need that arises is a safe environment. Our safety needs are apparent even early in childhood, as children have a need for safe and predictable environments and typically react with fear or anxiety when these needs are not met.

    Love and Belonging Needs:

According to Maslow, the next need in the hierarchy involves feeling loved and accepted. This need includes both romantic relationships as well as ties to friends and family members. It also includes our need to feel that we belong to a social group. Importantly, this need encompasses both feeling loved and feeling love towards others.

    Esteem Needs:

Our esteem needs involve the desire to feel good about ourselves. According to Maslow, esteem needs include two components. The first involves feeling self-confidence and feeling good about oneself. The second component involves feeling valued by others; that is, feeling that our achievements and contributions have been recognized by other people. When people’s esteem needs are met, they feel confident and see their contributions and achievements as valuable and important.

    Self-Actualization Needs:

Self-actualization refers to feeling fulfilled, or feeling that we are living up to our potential. One unique feature of self-actualization is that it looks different for everyone. For one person, self-actualization might involve helping others; for another person, it might involve achievements in an artistic or creative field. Essentially, self-actualization means feeling that we are doing what we feel we are meant to do.
