This week we will be discussing one of the most difficult cognitive distortions many people face. We are talking about 'all or nothing thinking'.Â
Licensed Therapist Ashley Thorne defines this by saying, âYou only have two options and there is no gray area in between.â It is the thinking that you canât be beautiful and have flaws, you canât be successful and have failures. This thinking is that happiness can only be found if you are currently on the positive side.Â
Today, we start our week by talking about Growth and Mistakes. Most people are working toward positive growth - but sometimes we fail. These failures should not define us. Perfection is not sustainable. Peaks and valleys are always going to occur.Â
Ashley Thorne has a way to try and combat this. Try using the word âandâ instead of âorâ. Here is an example: âI am a good person AND I am a bad person. I have a lot of great qualities AND I have poor qualities."
This helps you to see your positive and negative qualities and not be defined by simply the negative.
J.K. Rowling states, âIt is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all in which case you failed by default.â
