In this episode, Dr. Julie Hanks coaches Lisa Valentine Clark, actor, author, and host of The Lisa Show, and addresses the question “How can I find the balance between honoring a person I’ve lost while moving forward to create new memories?” In this episode, Lisa talks about the grief she has felt with losing her husband to ALS, and the challenge she has faced wanting to honor his memory while learning how to move on to make new memories. Sometimes when moving forward after a loss, there’s a fear that maybe we don’t love the person we lost as much or we don’t honor them, and we don’t want to betray our loved one.
During this episode, Dr. Hanks shares with Lisa that so often we think we have to pick one or the other, moving on or remembering, and we don’t have to choose. Moving on can be honoring our loved one, and honoring and remembering our loved one can be part of moving on. The level of grief is the same as the level of love and the depth is the same as the height. You can’t have deep love without deep grief when you lose someone.
