Would you ever pick up the habit of smoking in order to lose some weight? After all it is effective- by lowering your metabolic rate and reducing your appetite you’re bound to shed a few pounds. It sounds like a quick fix worth considering, but ultimately we hope that this isn’t something that you would do because everyone is well aware of the longer-term health consequences of smoking. The downsides are too severe. But we think this is exactly what is happening when you prioritize getting rich over building wealth. Sure there will be some short-term goals and lifestyle improvements that you’ll be able to make, but the long-term effects of pursuing a lifestyle like this are ultimately going to undermine your financial foundation. Listen as we talk about the differences between getting rich and building wealth. We also highlight some unhealthy behaviors that we might be tempted towards, in the pursuit of riches. And then finally we discuss how it is that we can actually build our own wealth.

Scams are kind of like zombies. The formerly popular TV show The Walking Dead is set in a sort of zombie apocalypse and was filmed here in Atlanta. But like zombies, the scams never stop and there seems to be a never-ending litany of folks who are trying to get their hands on our money. It truly is a serious problem- the FTC received 5.7 million reports with a total of $5.9 billion lost to scams in 2021! And on top of that scammers have gotten really sophisticated and are specifically targeting younger folks by using platforms like social media or dating apps and targeting Venmo balances and crypto holdings. Listen as we discuss a number of different sneaky scams that are targeting a younger generation, how they work, and then what you can do to protect your money.

It’s time to go Parks-and-Rec on this episode and talk about treating yo self while still being a responsible adult and not breaking the bank. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat- we all want to be able to splurge every now and again. But we also need to make sure that we’re not going overboard to the detriment of our financial health. Companies are waging war against our credit cards and checking accounts with advertising agencies at their sides. Our attention has been hijacked by marketers and this often leads to us buying more stuff that we don’t actually need. Couple that with rising prices due to inflation and higher levels of consumer debt and we realize that it’s going to take a healthy combination of wisdom, discipline, and intentional spending. Listen as we tackle all of this and as we propose some rules that will help us to be effective, but not excessive when it comes to treating ourselves.

Our mental state has so much to do with how we handle our money- this is one of the many things we talked about with Paco de Leon. Paco founded The Hell Yeah Group which is a financial firm focused on inspiring creatives to engage with their personal and business finances. She started this work after her experiences in small business consulting, financial planning, and wealth management. Paco’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, and NPR and her new book “Finance for the People” was published earlier this month. Not only is she the author, but Paco is also the illustrator- her drawings do a fantastic job driving home the different points she makes in her book so we’re recommending it for all the visual learners out there. During this episode we talk about what Paco learned from being a debt collector and her time in the marijuana industry, what it takes to be a creative freelancer, the role our emotions play, how she keeps her consumption in check, and plenty more!
