Fear is an emotion that is hard-wired in us as humans, and so we naturally want to avoid the things that frighten us. But the biggest problem with this survival instinct is that there are times when we must face these fears in order to move forward and get ahead in life. We have a natural desire to avoid pain but if we don’t address it head-on, it’ll often lead to worse pain and problems down the road. This is often true when it comes to relationships, with our physical health, and it’s definitely true when it comes to our money. It’s a serious issue when we let fear get in the way of taking action. During this episode, with Halloween just around the corner, we cover some of the most common money fears that lurk in the back of our minds, and how to face them down in order to get one step closer to financial freedom.

It’s time to do a deep dive on raising financially savvy kids! We’re joined by Liz Frazier who is a fee-only, Certified Financial Planner and she is also the author of “Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands: How to Teach Young Kids About Finance.” Liz is all about kids and finance, and to get specific, it was when Liz was pregnant with the first of her three children that she was setting up a 529 acct and preparing her will, that everything clicked. That’s when she realized that she wanted to be a financial planner because, like so many new parents, she realized the overwhelming need to make sure her family was financially prepared. And raising children who are equipped with financial knowledge is an important part of that role as a parent. During this episode we talk about having money conversations that stick with our kids, the way Liz does allowance with her 3 kids, how to get kids excited to save, spend, and share, among many other helpful topics.

Joel doesn’t like to eat at fancy restaurants- not only because paying a ton of money isn’t his jam, but also because there are all these rules of etiquette that fine diners are just supposed to know. What’s he going to do with that 3rd fork anyways?! The same is often true when it comes to our money and the social situations we find ourselves in. Splitting the bill with friends when we go out- what should we keep in mind there? How should we talk about money with our co-workers, friends, and family? When you’re on a date, who pays for what and how quickly should you dive into money conversations with someone you’re serious about? And because we’re all unique individuals, we argue that there are no hard and fast rules that dictate our actions when it comes to our money. Instead there is a lot of nuance and it takes a lot of emotional intelligence in order to get your money etiquette right. It’s not always clear what path we should take and so during the episode we provide a helpful framework to help you decide. And we also share our thoughts on some common scenarios so that we can all avoid that awkward tension that might arise.

Today we have the pleasure of talking with Carl Jensen who found himself trapped in a cubicle as a software developer nearly 9 years ago, when he set off on a journey to achieve the status of: financially independent and retired early. That’s when he started his site 1500 Days and has been blogging under the moniker Mr. 1500. Carl has since achieved FIRE and continues to be incredibly productive in the world of real estate with his live-in flips, all while pursuing a very intentional life in Longmont Colorado. Carl also happens to be a good friend of ours who we met years ago. And after spending some more time together recently at a personal finance conference, we realized we were overdue in having him come on as a guest on the show. We discuss everything from the downside of sharing personal financial information publicly, practical tips in finding a great property to flip, to how it is that Carl owns over 600 shares of Tesla stock!
