Winning the lottery shouldn’t be a part of your financial plan- but why are we so enthralled by the idea of winning the lottery?! On average, Americans spend over $1,000 every year for the chance to strike it rich. That’s a lot of wasted money that could be going towards literal investments. But even though we’re not going to win millions, statistically speaking, this exercise can provide some insights about the ways we want to spend our money and our time. This is helpful because there is a much higher likelihood that we would experience some sort of windfall in our lives whether that be a bonus at work, proceeds from a home sale, or even an inheritance. And if we haven’t taken the time to think through what we would do in these scenarios, there’s a good chance we could make the wrong decision in the heat of the moment. We’re going to get personal and share what we would do if we won the lottery, and we’re also going to explain how you can come up with your own money mission statement.

Feeling overworked?! Between trying to get ahead at your 9-5 and pursuing side hustles, chances are really high that you feel like your work-life balance is out of whack. That doesn’t even take into account that more of us are working from home. We find ourselves chronically fatigued and exhausted because we give too much to our work, leaving little left for ourselves and those around us who we love. For instance, as a result most Americans don’t take all their vacation time- and when they do, they find it impossible to actually stop working! This ongoing cycle of never-ending work is leading more folks than ever to despise the work they once loved while other important areas in their lives like relationships, health, and hobbies continue to suffer. This is an important topic for us to cover as we seek to implement some practices to restore that work-life balance and then create boundaries to maintain that balance.

We’re kicking off the week by answering listener questions! And if you have a question that you’d like for us to answer on the show, we’d love for you to submit your own via HowToMoney.com/ask/ , send us your voice memo. Regardless of how random or bizarre you might think it is, we want to hear it!
1 - Should I put all of the proceeds from my home sale towards the down payment on a new home?
2 - As a renter, should I pay extra in order for my rent payments to get reported to the credit bureaus?
3 - Does it make sense to get insurance for my e-bike?
4 - How can we make sure that our finances are in a strong position before having a baby?
5 - Is there a best time of year to invest a lump sum of money?

Since this is episode 404, we’re talking all about the money lessons that we can learn from our city Atlanta (which is sometimes referred to as the 404). You can learn lessons in unintended places- there are things to be learned all around us, if only we’re keeping an eye out for them. For instance, one of the impacts of the Covid lockdowns last year was that we couldn’t go anywhere and our calendars were pretty much wiped clean. And the unintended lesson that many Americans learned was that we probably had way too many events on the calendar to begin with. We quickly learned that less activities and more family time was a good thing. And so when it comes to Atlanta, there are a ton of different personal finance lessons that we can learn- from specific things like terrible traffic, the cultural diversity we find in the city, tax breaks being offered to the film industry, our sports teams, and plenty more! So be sure to listen in order to learn some valuable ATLien money lessons.

Today we are joined by career expert Ashley Stahl. She has a new book out titled You Turn: Get Unstuck, Discover Your Direction, and Design Your Dream Career that we dive into during this episode. And while we’re on the topic of job hunting, Ashley has quite the remarkable resume herself- she interned with Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger, pursued a career in counterterrorism while getting her Masters degree in War Studies in London, & then worked for a defense contractor at the Pentagon running an award-winning program. But despite all her success, Ashley still felt a degree of uncertainty until she finally changed her career path. Ashley is now a career coach where she empowers people to discover their authentic careers, land more job offers, and launch their dream businesses.

If your personal finances are in a solid position and you’ve already taken advantage of the tax advantaged accounts that are available to you, we believe that it could make a ton of sense for you to become a real estate investor. There are a number of different factors that you need to consider, before you start making offers! We tackle some of the common excuses that some folks give for why they don’t want to invest in real estate, in order to help you decide if real estate investing is right for you.
