  • #15: Goal Mapping

On today's podcast, I'm discussing one of my favorite pastimes and greatest strengths -- goal mapping. This is something I worked on with my Mastermind clients during our in-person "intensive" in Nashville and I thought I'd share an overview of the process with you. I'll explain why it is crucial to your success and how you can start doing this right away.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • A behind-the-scenes glimpse of what we covered during the Mastermind Intensive this past week
    • How even high achievers can have difficulty with goal mapping
    • Why you need to set a clear path to your goals
    • The difference between a 30-day and 90-day plan and how each serves you differently
    • How to differentiate between a goal, project, and task and why each step is more than just part of good project management
    • My weekly and daily planning routine
    • A step-by-step tutorial on how to begin goal mapping, testing, and implementing your strategies so that you can start reaching your goals even faster!

  • #14: Lessons Learned

In today's episode, I wanted to share with you some of the major insights and breakthroughs that I had while attending a recent leadership retreat in Hawaii. This includes how we limit our own knowledge and potential to grow and learn, how not sharing details about our businesses or ourselves can actually hold us back, and so much more.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Why you need to trust your intuition…
    • Why do we keep making the same mistakes over again?
    • How (and why) to get out of your bubble
    • Sharing specifics with others can actually serve you
    • Why we absolutely need to be vulnerable
    • Moving past excellence to your "zone of genius"

  • #13: Working Vacations

On this episode I'm discussing the importance of taking time off for yourself, and why this is an absolute necessity if you're going to maintain your health. Not doing this can lead to depression and anxiety, among other things, and today I'm going to give you tips and tricks that will allow you to take that much-needed vacation.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • Why lawyers are conditioned to be available 24/7 and are expected to put their careers before anything else in their lives
    • What kind of message are you sending your team when you feel like you can't check out?
    • How taking a real vacation can help yourself, your marriage and your career
    • No one will respect your time if you don't…

    • Lessons from the "tight rope challenge"
    • Why it's important to breathe and be in the moment
    • How we can miss opportunities and solutions because we are too focused on the problem directly in front of us
    • Why we need to acknowledge the blessings in our life

  • #11: The "P" Word

In this episode, I'm discussing perfectionism and how it can get in our way and hold us back. I'll be the first to admit that I struggle with this issue. The pursuit of perfection creates unneeded stress and anxiety and holds others to impossible standards. If you try to be everything to everyone and appear like you always have it together, this episode is for you!

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • How perfectionism kills creativity
    • Perfectionism can be outward facing, as well as inward
    • Is perfectionism a form of an addiction/disease?
    • Why it's far more important to take action than create a perfect plan or goal
    • Why as women we should start being more vulnerable and lower our standards of perfection to allow other women to do the same
    • Why I now pay attention to when I do things to impress others versus doing it because I truly get enjoyment and satisfaction from it (and how you can too)

    You're Invited!

The Life & Law in Balance Retreat will be held at the all-inclusive five-star Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona from June 11-14, 2017. The June retreat is open to all female attorneys. • #10: Your Brain on Law

On today's show, I reveal how meditation can be a great way to deal with the stress and anxiety of being a lawyer. I share the science behind meditation as well as my personal struggle (and triumph) in finding a technique that worked for my busy mind.

Things you will learn in this episode:

    • How the pressures of being a lawyer can affect your daily life and why a healthy outlet for your mind is critical
    • What most lawyers have in common and why these personality traits can create an impediment to trying "new age" (although they're not so new...) practices like meditation
    • My experience in trying to figure out how to turn off my mind and meditate; I was convinced it wasn't possible for a lawyer like me but I was wrong
    • The neuroscience behind meditation and how Harvard researchers have proven that it changes the brain over time
    • The benefits of meditation including how 50 year-olds can have the same memory as 20 year-olds
    • What changes you can expect to experience if you start a regular meditation practice
    • Tips and resources to get started, even if you've tried it before and believe it's impossible for your busy legal mind!

  • #9: The Numbers Don't Lie

In this episode, I'm taking a hard look at the data available on the status of women in the legal profession in the United States. Statistics don't have to be boring because they tell stories - and these numbers say a lot. Has there been any progress made over the past decade for women in law and, if so, how much and in what areas? I give my thoughts on where we can go from here, both collectively and individually, and what I think are the leading issues facing us today.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:

    • What is the '50/15/15' conundrum?
    • The "challenge" issued by the National Association of Women Lawyers in 2006 to address promotion issues in the profession
    • How law firms may be creating roles for women that are actually allowing us to go backward
    • Why I believe participation in the Challenge decreased recently
    • Women are paid less in other industries, but what does the data say for law firms?
    • Proof that unconscious bias is happening when women don't have a seat at the table
    • At the current rate of progress, here's when we'll meet the objectives of the Challenge
    • How women of color have it worse in law firms today
    • And, where we go from here

  • #8: Why Saying Yes Means Saying No

How many of you try to be everything to everyone? If you struggle with saying No, (like I used to), or feel guilty when you do, then you'll love this episode. Today I share how making conscious decisions will allow you to respond, rather than react, to the opportunities that are presented to you.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:

    • For every Yes, there is at least one No
    • You need to give yourself permission to make better choices and decisions
    • There's only a finite amount of time in each day, yet an infinite amount of ways to fill it
    • How when it comes to our time, there is ALWAYS a trade-off
    • How your self-care time, even it's just watching TV, matters…
    • Where do you start when trying to gain awareness, and how does it relate to mindfulness?
    • What happens when you're not engaged in, or passionate about, volunteering
    • A way to gracefully say No, all while giving someone else a chance to do something
    • Why I very rarely accept lunch invitations for the middle of the day
    • Never say Yes on the spot!
