Taryn is an occupational therapist by profession and has been practicing for the past 11 years within occupational rehabilitation and insurance. As a qualified group fitness trainer and previous owner of an F45 gym in Melbourne’s CBD Taryn loves the health and fitness industry so much that after recovering from an HA and disordered eating behaviors she has decided to follow her true calling and become an accredited sports nutritionist while on maternity leave. Tayn is currently undertaking further study in preconception & pregnancy nutrition as well as learning about natural conception methods which is Tarryns ultimate passion project :)
Though all of the above is AMAZING, Taryns most rewarding role is being a mama to her beautiful 1-year-old son, Kai.
Today's episode is a wonderful insight into life with HA and disordered eating behaviors. We cover some sensitive and important topics which I know many of you will resonate, empathise and appreciate. It takes a lot of strength to discuss vulnerable moments in our lives and I am so grateful to Taryn for coming on and being so transparent when sharing her journey from HA to motherhood.

Exert: When it comes to recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA), relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) or a malnourishment disorder in the context of an energy deficit – it’s logical and potentially appropriate to consider using calorie counting as a method to restore a healthy energy balance.
But is counting calories ever truly appropriate or helpful and should you count calories when you’re looking to get your period back?
My aim in this article is to provide a review of the notion of calorie counting, including potential pitfalls and possible benefits in the context of HA recovery. It is not my intention to provide a definitive answer to the “calorie conundrum” for those looking to recover missing periods, but rather to provide you with knowledge and insights to enable you to decide what may work best for you.

What is a calorie?
What are the pitfalls of counting calories?
Our energy requirements are not uniform or static
Human bodies are not laboratories
How we prepare and consume food makes a difference
Calories do not = pleasure
Are there any benefits to counting calories in HA recovery?

If you want to learn the strategies I discuss please get your hands on the HA Ebook I created.
The ebook was created to help women recover from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and Eating Disorders. It is filled with practical exercises and journal prompts to help women to dig deep into their emotions, discover their fears, their motivations, and their strength. It is also used to identify thoughts and behaviors (both rational and irrational).
As a recovered bulimic, and chronic dieter (6 years HA) I not only understand the mindset of someone with an eating disorder, but I have lived it. Every emotion I felt, every lesson I leant, every anxiety, fear and tear I shed fuelled the creation of the HA Recovery Ebook. Reading this testimonial was an overwhelming experience for me and that it why I want to share it with you. For a long time I have looked at my eating disorders as a blessing in disguise, reading this testimonial feels like yet another confirmation that my journey was for a reason greater than anything I could have ever imagined.
