In this edition of The Way Out, I’m beyond excited to bring you my interview with award winning director and producer and founder of Emmy-nominated People People Media, Jared Callahan. A quick note before we proceed: Much to my chagrin and surprise I discovered after this interview that inexplicably my default recording microphone on my podcasting rig reverted to – insert gasp here – the microphone built into my webcam. As horrified as I was at the discovery, you can still hear yours truly just fine despite the sub-par webcam mic and you can hear Jared just fine despite the internet gremlins on his end, and it afforded me a few opportunities in light of this unfortunate turn of events. First, as my fiancée said to me after watching me have a near meltdown and listening to the raw audio, “it’s fine, it doesn't sound that bad at all” – I realized my podcasting ego was making a much bigger deal out of it than it actually was and the goal of this podcast is not audiophile perfection but to bring you powerful recovery stories and recovery power topics to jumpstart or reenergize your recovery. Second, and not for nothing it pushed me to level up my post production and audio editing game to a new level to message the audio for a more pleasant listening experience. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming, which is my interview with Jared Callahan about his new Project “Clean Slate”. I must confess I did not watch the film before interviewing Jared and I’m glad I didn’t because as a result this interview is 100 % certified spoiler free. I was so excited to watch the film after our interview I legit rented it immediately and watched it while working out that very night. This film is unequivocally the best documentary on addiction and recovery I’ve seen to date. Clean Slate does a marvelous job in telling a story about how real folks in Recovery go from step zero to step one and this film goes a long way to allow those who experience addiction in their own lives to be seen and enable those who don’t to develop compassion and empathy for those who do, and that perhaps is one of the most noble missions of all so listen up.
