José L Areta currently works as a lecturer in Sports Nutrition and Metabolism at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moors University.

José’s primary interest is in the area of training-nutrient interactions in humans. In other words, he investigates how to manipulate ingestion of carbohydrates, fat and protein around training to optimise physical performance and health.

The outputs of his research have not only expanded the knowledge of the field but had significant impact and influence on determining current dietary recommendations and practices world-wide.

His work has provided novel insights in relation to the amount, timing, quantity and distribution of carbohydrates, fat and protein and dietary supplements around training. Over the last few years José has been developing his research in the area of the endocrinological, metabolic and physiological effects of energy restriction, in which he is currently growing his research team and capability.
José is also a coach for elite cyclists and triathletes and he brings his research into practice when working with those athletes.

  • Meghan Hicks and Bryon Powell of iRunFar, the Hub of Ultrarunning | Koopcast Episode 39

In this episode of the KoopCast Coach Jason Koop speaks with Meghan Hicks and Bryon Powell of iRunFar.

This episode of the KoopCast is with two of the linchpins of the ultrarunning community, Meghan Hicks and Bryon Powell of iRunFar. What started as a personal blog now turned into the quintessential reference about all things ultrarunning. They serve as valued stewards of the community and selflessly bring ultrarunning information, inspiration and race coverage, although the latter has been void as of late. I have always admired Bryon and Meghan’s passion for the community and the care that they take with how they approach covering ultrarunning is apparent in this discussion.

  • Happy Racers Go Faster with Sports Psychologist Dr. Kristin Keim | KoopCast Episode 37

In this episode of the KoopCast Coach Jason Koop speaks with Kristin Keim.

Kristin Keim is a sports psychologist out of Newberry, South Carolina. She has one of the more renown practices sports psychology practices in the country today that consists of all types of endurance athletes, cyclists, triathletes, MMA fighters.

Her modus operandi, ‘Happy Racers Go Faster’ reflects her own innate positivity, and also her relentless pursuit to get the most out of the athletes she works with by centering on a philosophy that puts the person first not the athlete first.

Kristin’s practice blends her academic background in clinical psychology with her personal background as a national-caliber cyclist and you will definitely feel that theme of an athlete who has been there and done that fused with a practitioner that wants to do the same. I caught Kristin right after she presented to our coaching group, and we bring some of those lessons into this conversation on how to athletes should focus internally, how they can go about building a village and how happiness and fiery competitiveness can coexist. We also spend some time going over how ultrarunning is a fantastic case study in mental fortitude and strategies on how to prevent the dreaded DNF.

I think regardless of what kind of endurance athlete you are, ultrarunner or cyclist, you will gain valuable insight into how to step up your mental game. Kristin’s outgoing, pull no punches and insightful demeanor is infectious down to her very laugh that’s punctuated by her subtle beautiful southern drawl. I must warn you, there is a sprinkle of salty language interspersed in this podcast. Consider yourself forewarned. \
