什么礼物坚决不能送？


一、Gifts to NOT Give 不能送的礼物


1.Clothes OR accessories /æk'sɛsərɪz/ 配饰
衣服或者配饰
You don’t know the person’s size and style.
因为你不知道对方的尺码以及穿戴风格。
It’s too much of a guessing game.
这就像一个猜谜游戏。
Maybe these gifts end up gathering dust in the closet or being donated.
可能收到的衣服会在衣柜里布满灰尘，或者最后被捐赠出去。
这会让对方心生愧疚。


2.Things you have lying around the house
家中的闲置物品
They call this “regifting” .
把家中闲置物品当作礼物送人的行为叫作”regifting”（礼物转送）。
It’s really uncomfortable.
这会让人觉得不舒服。
It seems like you didn’t put a lot of thought into the gift 
而且看上去你好像没有用心去挑选礼物。


3.Hygiene /ˈhaɪdʒiːn/ products 卫生保健用品
deodorant /diːˈoʊdərənt/ 体香剂


facewash 面部清洁用品
......
These gifts give a message that： 
this person is smelly 
这个人身上有怪味
needs to do something about their acne or B.O.
需要注意一下他们的痘痘或者狐臭
*acne /ˈækni/ n. 粉刺
*B.O.=body odor 狐臭
If the soap is handmade and has good smell,it can be OK.
如果是手工皂并且味道好闻的话，送肥皂未尝不可。
Unless the person is close to you and you know what kind of products they like.
除非是很亲近的人，你懂得他们的喜好，不然千万不要送，
尤其不要送女人（女人对自己用的东西很挑剔的）


Perfume is OK.But it runs a risk of that person doesn't like the scent.
香水也许是可以的，但不能保证对方会喜欢你送的香水的味道。（有点冒险）

送礼物的一大原则
Here is A BIG RULE:
Not too much pressure！不要太贵重！ 


4.Self-improvement gifts 自我提升类礼物
health or diet books 健康保健书籍
weight loss or gym equipment 减肥或健身器材
There is a big culture difference between China and Western countries (especially America).
由于中西方文化的巨大差异（尤其是美国），可能在我们看来自我提升类的礼物可以送，但对他们来讲，这是一个禁忌（taboo） 。
Even between close friends or family , it’s considered rude to bring up the topic.
在西方国家，即便是最亲近的家人或者是朋友之间，谈论健康、体重话题也是粗鲁的。


*body positive movement 打破传统的对美的追求，接纳自己的身材


如果有人对你的身材不满，你可以霸气地耍一句：
It’s none of your business! 关卿何事！


二、Gifts to give 可以送的礼物


1.A traditional Chinese object or handcraft有中国传统特色的东西或者手工艺品
Chinese painting 国画
Chinese fans 扇子
paper-cut 剪纸
calligraphy  /kəˈlɪɡrəfi/  书法
scroll paintings 卷轴画
* fall through the cracks 容易被忽视的东西


Mary的brother结婚的时候，Mary送了有中国特色的、为他们特意制作的画，
Mary的SIL（sister in law）还特意写了感谢信给Mary，感谢这份特殊的礼物。
The coolest things for them are objects that not many people get.
对外国友人来说，最赞的礼物就是有特殊寓意的小物件。
 
They want to eventually take them home.他们想把这些小物件带回去。 
put them on their shelves（shelf的复数） 放在架子上
they can look at them 时常看见这些东西
remember their time in China 回忆在中国的时光
share their stories with others 与朋友们分享小物件背后的故事
*tchotchke /'tʃɒtʃkə/ n. 小物件 （tchotchke是斯洛伐克语）


Teaching or sharing something from your own culture is a special gift.
传授分享中国文化是一种特别的礼物。


几周前，翩翩老师与我们外国同事喝茶时，向他们讲了茶文化，好学的Mary听得都入神了。很多人不知道该跟外国友人谈论什么话题，其实，你大可谈论一下中国文化，很多外国人都是对中国文化很着迷的。


2.Giving a gift according to their culture有他们文化特色的东西
Sometimes，it’s hard for them to live in China.
有时，对外国人来说，居住在异国他乡也是不易的。
It’s really easy to become homesick here.
他们也会有乡愁。
Sometimes it’d hard to find things on Taobao as a foreigner .
他们在淘宝上不是很容易找到自己想要的东西的。
如果你可以让他们尝一下他们家乡的味道，那必将是一份意义非凡的礼物。

哈哈，预警！！！这里有一碗来自Mary的狗粮，你要不要尝一下？！！小编先干为敬！

For Christmas，Mary gave black pudding imported from England to his English boyfriend.

在圣诞节的时候，Mary送他英国男朋友从英国进口来的黑布丁。Mary男友都freaked out（惊到了），特别惊喜。 

Although it means a lot for foreigners to receive gifts from their own home,it is not obligated to do so.

尽管对外国友人来说，收到有他们家乡特色的东西会额外有意义，但是不要有心理负担，不要觉得作为朋友你应该去送那些。

还是那条rule：Not too much pressure.

What is the most important is that you put a lot of thought on the gift.

最重要的用心。
