This last week we have been dealing with some gossip about our old salon and our event, LachCon. It's been painful to hear people share their opinions on us when it's so obvious they don't know us or haven't even been to either of our businesses. Gossip can destroy a business, and it will definitely destroy a team from within as trust gets thrown out the window once gossip is allowed in the house. Gossip in a business creates a toxic environment that makes going to work a miserable place to be. In today's episode, we share our thoughts on how we think it's best to handle situations where someone has upset you. The normal thing to do (sadly) is talk to everyone else in the world but the person who upset you. What do you do when a new client lays down on your bed with bad lash work? Do you say anything? Does hot weather affect your client's lash retention? This is a new one for us. We've been in this industry for over 17 years, and until now, we've never heard this question.Recently some of you have sent us posts where lash artists are instructing their clients that they might need to cancel their appointment because it's too hot. They go on to share that when it's hot, the lashes won't last, and there's no point in applying lashes. Another post said that you should plan to come back every 1-2 weeks for a lash fill instead of the normal 2-3 weeks. So what is going on here? Is this really an issue? Do cyanoacrylates not hold up under intense heat? Do we need to cancel lash appointments when it's hot and lose money? What's the deal here? Often when business is slow, people will say the market is saturated...and that might be true. That said, I believe saying that the market is "saturated" is usually someone just trying to find a cop-out on why their business isn't doing well. You just blame the market instead of taking ownership and realizing that, most likely, you are not marketing or building a business that people are drawn to. Michelle Nguyen, the CEO of Paris Lash Academy, entered a seemingly saturated market four years ago and found a way to grow her lash brand into a major player in the lash industry. She's accomplished something quite remarkable, and we just had to have her on our podcast to share her lash journey from solo lash artists to running one of the largest brands in the industry out of the small community of Reno, Nevada. Who do you like to take advice from? Friends you look up to? Family members? Successful business people you know? Working in a toxic work environment is the worst. It's hard to get out of bed in the morning when all you feel is dread for the coming day at the salon. I've been there, and I know many of you have been there too. Today we talk about all things toxic...we talk about what you can do in a toxic work environment, what you need to do if you have become toxic, and we give some advice to salon owners so they can avoid making their salon a toxic place. No one wants to work in a toxic environment, and I do believe most salon owners don't want to create a toxic environment...but yet it still happens. Hopefully, after listening to this episode, you can ask yourself some good questions, and if you are working in an oppressive business, you can make some changes soon to fix that.
