Do you tell your clients to avoid oil-based products with the thought if they do, it will hurt your client's lash retention? Do you tell clients to apply oil on the lashes if they want to help to remove lashes on their own? It's okay if you do...this has been taught in our industry for the last 18 years. We have some news for you today. Lash glues are not affected in any way by oil. Oil does not break down the glue and cause it to come off. Oil does not affect lash retention at all. I know this goes against everything you have been taught but one just needs to do a little research on cyanoacrylate, and you'll learn that the adhesive is actually oil proof by nature. I bet some of you are saying, "Paul...you dummy...I had a client use an oil-based makeup and all her lashes fell out...that's all the proof I need".While I'm sure it appeared that was the reason, I can assure it you are connecting dots that can't be connected. If you ever take our lash retention course you'll understand better then. The real reason why clients' lashes don't last is because of your technique...not because of the glue. Sorry to be a party pooper but that is just the truth...you can listen to other episodes (check out #145) where we discuss this.In this episode, we discuss this in great detail and talk about an experiment we did to prove that this is true. We also posted a couple of videos on our Instagram page that you should check out that show how you can still lash a client while there is actually oil on a client's lashes...and the lashes hold up just fine for the next two weeks. LashBase is a very successful British lash brand that had plans to open its US branch back in March of 2020 just as....you know it...Covid hit. Instead of launching their new brand, where they had spent a large amount of money, they had to pack things up and head back home before the US or the UK shut down all travel. Flash forward almost 2 years later and just now LashBase is launching their new venture.Today Jamie Butler joins us to share a little about this crazy journey and how things are going with the US launch. We love salon owners! We have always felt they have the most difficult job in the lash industry. Now we are a little biased as we ran a lash salon for 13 years. That said we have talked to quite a few lash brand owners who have also ran salons in the past, and most of them have agreed running a salon is super hard.One of the things that makes it difficult is the way employees often like to quit their jobs...by burning the bridge. Now I get it...some bridges need to be burned as not all employers are respectful and kind to their teams...but I feel overall employees burn the bridge because it helps them to justify why they are leaving. Promades and Premades are making huge strides in our industry. 5 years ago, most people hated the idea of these kinds of lashes and if they tried them, they'd say that the lashes were clunky and not as pretty as handmade volume.Cut to 2022 and everything has changed. What are your thoughts about lash maps? Do you love them? Do you just wing it? Maybe you've developed your own system for design?When Tussanee started doing lashes in 2016, lash maps were not a thing...but over the last 5-6 years it seems like lash maps are pretty much standard now when it comes to applying lashes. Lash maps are so popular now, trainers include designing lash maps as part of their training. For us lash maps can be a great tool, especially when you are first learning how to lash, but in the long run, we feel lash maps can actually keep you from becoming a great lash artist. In today's episode, Tussanee shares why she doesn't use lash maps and shares a little about how she approaches lash design. We don't hate lash maps and if they are your jam, please keep using them. The lash industry is unique from the rest of the beauty industry in many ways but one of the biggest differences is most lash artists work for themselves. I'd even say most never worked for a lash salon or any kind of salon before they opened their business.While I know our industry celebrates this independence as a good thing I do feel it does hurt our industry in some ways too. Most lash artists have no business training or modeling to follow when they start their business so this means they are going to make more mistakes and some of them can be quite costly. As former salon owners, we have always felt we should follow the hair salon model where you graduated from beauty school and you work at a salon where you can be mentored. Why do you post what you do on our IG page? Are you trying to attract new clients? Are you trying to educate your clients? Are you trying to impress other lash artists?Sometimes when I look at lash artists' IG pages, I scratch my head because it appears some of you just think your IG is a good place to vent your frustrations.
