They also make recommendations for inviting a safer/healthier marriage theology and climate that will contribute to individual & marital flourishing.

In this and the next episode, Val & Nathan dig into men on men violence due to the culture of patriarchy. In this episode they touch on male-dominated corporate culture competition, college fraternity hazing, and possibly most sensitive to many of listeners: to LDS missionary hazing rituals experienced by many of this faith tradition. 

Why does this happen? Patriarchy is a dominator model where not all men get to dominate. And those who are found on the "one down" side of this dominator model are often victims of violence and abuse.

Show notes: In this episode Val walks through the five characteristics typical of churches that engage in hypernormalization and shares thoughts on how this might be a way to explain some of the phenomenon going on in the current LDS church. 

Val shares how hypernormalization is a tactic often used to skirt complex issues like the need for theological reform and the need to address sensitive subjects like financial indiscretion sexual abuse reporting issues. She also touches the importance of not following the rules of hypernormalization even if there are some consequences.

In this episode Val shares an update about how she is processing the recent events of her and Nathan's forced resignation in the face of excommunication by looking at this both as a personal issue for them but also plays with the idea that they are playing a symbolic role in a much larger narrative that is unfolding and colliding in both conservative Christian AND conservative political spaces and is gaining steam due to the concept of HYPERNORMALIZATION: a social phenomenon where cultural collectives know that things are very wrong but pretend that all is well.  

Friday's episode dives into how HYPERNORMALIZATION might explain much that is going on in our own heritage tradition and why those who do not participate in the "rules of hypernormalization" (by acknowledging issues exist) are punished.
