In this episode we talk with Dr. Moe St Martin about the journey back to health for him, his family and his patients. His journey started about 15 years ago and he has enjoyed a weight loss of 140 lbs. Now he successfully takes this intervention to his patients. His entire family had an ongoing battle with obesity and so he brought them all to our first conference ever in San Diego in 2016. Actually, he brought the woman cause he says, "we live in a matriarchal society so I needed to get the moms on board". He feels the information helped them understand the problem and the ongoing interactions they have been able to have with some of the speakers has helped them with breakthroughs.
Dr Moe talks about how the information at the latest conference on carbohydrate addiction, especially from Dr Robert Cywes, was hugely helpful to them. This year the entire family (14 of them) attended and the weight loss across the entire family is astounding, However, they all realise that they are in a constant battle with addiction and now they are starting to understand how they can effectively fight it.
We can't wait to see them at the next conference and check in with their family's progress.

Jennifer Opdycke is a Physician Assistant from Michigan who discovered carbohydrate restriction about 17 years ago through the Atkins program. She started to introduce it to her patients and found most of them responded positively. But within the practice she was in she was still not able to develop a patient base of her own and she had more and more patients coming to her who were keen to explore the therapeutic low carb or ketogenic option. She then came across an article about other PAs who had opened their own practice and she learned about the concept of Direct Primary Care.
Now she has a thriving practice which integrates other components as well such as emotional, stress and sleep management. This innovative model allows patients to have much better direct access to their health care provider.
You can contact Jennifer to find out more about their Direct Primary Care practice on their website or on Facebook.

Today we talk to Dr. Adele Hite about her herculean effort to co-ordinate the compilation of the document outlining Clinical Guidelines for Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction for us. Once we established the panel of advisers she set about creating the draft of the document and then bouncing it off the panel over and over until we were happy that we had it to the point where it could be published. This is a massive step towards establishing the Standard of Care for the prescription of Carbohydrate Reduction as a Therapeutic Intervention. That has been our main focus since about April 2018 and this document is a brilliant starting point for the conversations that will eventually lead to a consensus and an SoC for practitioners using this lifestyle intervention in their practice.
What's more exciting is that we have been approached by numerous people to translate it into several different languages. At this time we have published the Clinical Guidelines for Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction in German and Portuguese and Spanish, French, Dutch and Indonesian are close behind. We envisage translation into many other languages in the future.

In our last podcast we spoke with Dr. Brian Lenzkes who experienced a personal epiphany with restricting carbohydrates and is experiencing huge success with his patients who have adopted it. One of the first things he did when he got back from our conference in San Diego in July 2017 was to call his good friend, Jeff Kotterman, who is the president of the National Association of Sports Nutrition (NASN).
"You've got it all wrong", Dr. Lenzkes told him, "you shouldn't be feeding your athletes carbohydrates". Obviously Jeff totally disagreed but after a lengthy discussion he was convinced to go back and look at the evidence. He looked into it thoroughly and came to the conclusion that he was, in fact, wrong and proceeded to rewrite the curriculum of his course for the National Association of Sports Nutrition.
You can learn more about all the courses offered by the NASN here.

Dr Brian Lenzkes describes how he found the Low Carb lifestyle as he struggled with his own health while following the same Standard of Care advice he was offering to his patients. Seeing the great improvements in his own health, he then attended the LowCarbUSA - San Diego conference where he heard researchers and physicians from around the world talking about exactly what he had experienced for himself.
His patients started asking him what he was doing to look so good.and so he started telling them that, although it wan't currently Standard of Care, this is what he was doing. Some of them chose to follow his lead with spectacular results. Now he has more and more patients coming off their meds and he is loving practicing as a doctor again. Helping people is the whole reason he got into medicine in the first place and now he is no longer depressed about not being able to help any of his patients with their chronic conditions.

Doug Reynolds describes his heartache over his inability to help his family, especially his mom, who all need to embrace this lifestyle so badly. Dr. Ken Berry calls it the 'Powdered Butt Syndrome'. If someone powdered your butt as a baby they are unlikely to heed your advice once you grow up! But there are people who are open to the conversation so we focus on that in our efforts to change the world.

Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine, founders of LowCarbUSA, discuss why they are embarking on this podcast journey and what inspires them to do what they do. They also touch on the amazing work they have done to get the Clinical Guidelines document published for therapeutic Carbohydrate restriction which will, for sure be discussed further in future episodes.
