Having been through divorce myself I know firsthand it’s not an easy road. I also know from experience that it’s even more challenging as a parent.

It’s a time of transition, when everything can seem to be falling apart around and within you.

You may feel exhausted, defeated, hopeless or even want to end your life.

But I, and today’s Man Alive Podcast guest, wants you to know there IS hope! There will of course be challenges, but when you’re open to it life will bring you new people and experiences to support you, even amidst the pain.

Robin Choe has been through his own divorce as a dad and now hosts a group of thousands of divorced dads. The group offers understanding, guidance and people to lean on. You do NOT have to go through this alone. In fact you actually can’t. Going through divorce is often a time when men realize they can’t heal in isolation.

In our podcast conversation we discussed…

    * Something you can count on every day you’re alive that will give you hope* What’s possible when you shift from “Why me?” to seeing an opportunity to grow and know yourself  * The importance of letting go of the”Nice Guy” persona * Balancing taking care of those you love AND yourself * Robin’s path into the darkness and back out into the light

Robin shared a quote by Lao Tzu that is an inspiring reminder: “New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.”

If you’re going through a separation or divorce know that we believe in you and are here to support you.

  • #87: Master Listening For More Connection, Respect and Attraction – Matthew Solomon

Did you know that learning to listen well is one of the fastest ways to inspire support, respect, love and even attraction? Start to understand what you may be doing that causes others to feel unheard or misunderstood and learn to listen better!

    http://traffic.libsyn.com/manalive/listening-solomon.mp3

    Show notes

Has anyone ever told you you don’t listen, or don’t listen well?

Have you been accused of “being somewhere else” or not hearing someone and then thought (maybe a bit defensively) — “What are you talking about?! I’m right here. Where else could I be?”

Listening is actually more complicated than it seems as first glance. We do things, that we don’t even know we’re doing, that cause others to feel unheard or misunderstood.

On today’s Man Alive podcast I was joined by Matthew Solomon, an Empowerment Coach and author of Man School: Relating with Women in the #MeToo Era. We had an important conversation about how to listen better.

Listening is one of the main foundations of communication and yet we don’t often learn how to do it well.

When done well, listening opens doors, hearts and even inspires lust and attraction! It’s amazing. People can start to respect you more. They can be open to listening to you in ways they never have before. They can be more connected and inspired to support you. They can even feel more attracted to you!

In this conversation Matthew and I discussed:

    * The four parts of listening that have someone actually feel heard* Why you don’t have to get it right or fix anything when you’re listening* What the entertainment industry and working in casting taught Matthew about communication* A great job for the part of you that’s prone to catastrophize * The masterful action to take when you don’t feel heard or understood (hint: NOT blowing up or blaming)

We also did a LIVE DEMO of a conversation where Matthew modeled how to listen well…  Let us know your questions, insights and take-aways here on our FB page under the podcast posting. This is an important topic!

  • 8 Essential Conversations For Lasting Love – John Gottman

With 47 years of research and the ability to predict with 90% accuracy whether couples will stay together or separate, Dr. John Gottman has learned what makes love last.

These days relationships are as likely to fall apart as they are to stay together.

It’s sad and I am constantly on the look out for relationship resources to make relationships stronger.

This week I found something you can do to make a relationship last that’s actually really simple!

Sure, there are parts of relationship that are complicated and take time and attention to address, but two well-respected psychologists, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, recently came out with a new book that shares the incredible benefits that come from having a weekly date night!

They have done 47 years of research and tracked 3,000 couples, over decades. They know what they’re talking about!

A date night in itself is good for a relationship but you get even more benefit (more intimacy, fun, passion, etc.) from a date night that’s created around one of eight topics that are essential for lasting love.

On today’s Man Alive podcast Dr. John Gottman joined me to talk about:

    * The 8 most important conversations that help couples really get to know each other and navigate differences with care* The importance of letting go of defensiveness in making love last* How the simple act of having a date night each week could transform your relationship* How common it is for couples tend to spend hardly any time talking to each other these days, let alone talking about their relationship* Why it’s important to not shove your partner’s concerns under the rug — they will NOT go away!

The Gottmans have been a resource I have trusted for many years. I highly recommend checking out their books after listening to the podcast. If you’re in a relationship, or looking foe one, check out their new book first: Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for Lasting Love.
