On Tuesday, I had the incredible honor of asking a question of John C Maxwell. Yes, THAT John C Maxwell. one of the most well known, most respected speakers, authors, and leaders in the world. His books have sold millions of copies. And little old me was able to ask him one question. Just one. So what did I ask him?

I asked John C Maxwell what advice he would give to a new real estate agent who is just starting out in the industry today, just as our economy and our industry was flipped upside down, or to a real estate agent who was just starting to gain some traction and having some success. I asked him what he'd say to a real estate agent who was thinking about quitting the business.

John Maxwell's answer was fairly short and to the point, but incredibly impactful and profound.

In this episode, you'll hear why John C Maxwell says that right now, in the middle of this pandemic, is not a bad time to become a real estate agent, but rather it's a great time. You'll hear why he believes that Realtors just starting out in our industry today are lucky because they get to learn their hard lessons during hard times at the front end. He says that new Realtors have nothing to lose now while learning the hard lessons, versus having a lot more to lose when they're years into their real estate careers.

I'm exhausted. I've been busier and working harder these last few weeks than I have in a long time. The vast majority of it is really good, really exciting, and profitable. But at the same time, there are countless real estate agents who are feeling the opposite and are considering leaving the real estate industry.

We tell ourselves a lot of stories, for better or worse. One story that a staggering number of Realtors are telling themselves right now is that real estate is dead, agents can't work, and no deals are happening. Is that accurate? Did COVID-19 really just kill the real estate market?

I think you know the answer. Or rather, I think you know that you know the answer, but things like fear, stress, and uncertainty get in the way of clear thinking.

This week, we'll talk about whether or not these stories are even true, and how as real estate agents, we can chose to tell ourselves much more empowering stories instead.

You'll hear what is keeping me so busy, what I am spending 70% of my time doing right now, and why I'm so on fire about it. But more importantly, we'll talk about how you can get to that place in your own business as well.

This episode is a Realtors business survival guide for COVID-19 and the economic shock happening as a result of it. Every Realtor should be pivoting and making changes, both to their daily actions and to the marketing and messaging that we are putting out into the world. This episode discusses exactly what kind of marketing real estate agents can/should be doing, and how we need to adjust the messaging so that it's not ineffective, insensitive, or flat out offensive.

You'll hear specifically what Realtors should be doing at a neighborhood level to be leaders in the community and to have the biggest positive impact. You'll also hear how helping people now, when they need it the most, will absolutely lead to a thriving real estate business as we come out the other end of this coronavirus pandemic crisis and economic shift.

These extraordinary times call for extraordinary action. As Real Estate agents, we cannot just continue on with business as usual, because nothing about right now is usual.

We just wrapped up probably the craziest month of our entire generation. March 2020 will go down in history as the month that our lives, businesses, society, and country changed forever. Some of it bad, some of it good, some of it fantastic. But having a clear vision of what's happening right now, and what will happen 30, 60, 90, 120+ days from now is absolutely crucial if we as Realtors are going to sustain, grow, and thrive in these momentous times.

The current CoronaCrash that our stock market and overall economy is in the midst of is no joke. This damn virus, and the quarantines/shutdowns as a result, are already doing major damage. We don't yet know the extent that the housing market will be affected.

One thing is certain, real estate agents are scared, nervous, worried, and stressed. The uncertainty we're dealing with right now is causing many agents to take their foot off the gas, even questioning whether or not they'll even stay in the business.

What Realtors need is a roadmap on how to navigate an abrupt market shift, and some perspective on what the landscape will look like moving forward. This week, we talked to David Fanale, an industry leading real estate agent with over 40 years of experience. He's seen every tough market, downturn, crash and recession over the last 4 decades. David has successful survived and thrived through the ultra high interest rates of the Jimmy Carter era, the 1987 market crash, the dotcom bust, 9/11, and the Great Recession of 08/09.

David shares, from experience, what Realtors should be doing right now to survive and even grow in this extremely difficult time. As you'll hear, there are still so many opportunities that agents can take advantage of, but it takes a clear mind, and taking action.

Real estate industry, we may finally have a solution to end wire fraud. Safewire is a company using proprietary technology at the very beginning if a real estate transaction to completely eliminate any chance of wire fraud. This tech solution already exists, but it needs to be widely adopted by our industry in order to really make a difference.

But first off, what is wire fraud, how does it work, and can it really be stopped?

As you'll hear from Chris Sauerzopf, the CEO and co-founder of Safewire, wire fraud is a real problem, and yet no one is really talking about it. Sellers are getting their life savings stolen by hackers, and buyers are getting their down payments stolen. Lives are being ruined, and yet, real estate agents don't talk about it much. As if simply putting a wire fraud prevention message in your email signature is all it takes.

As Realtors, we have a fundamental responsibility to do everything in our power to make sure that our clients' money is protected! Aside from responsibility, how long would real estate agents stay in business if we were the weak link that allowed seller proceeds to get stolen? Many times, it's actually the Realtor who allows the hackers to intercept a wire. And when that is discovered, and the media writes a story about how that nice old couple just lost their entire net worth to wire fraud... who the hell is every going to hire that Realtor again? Hell, that agent could even be personally sued for negligence, and end up bankrupt.

Naturally, prevention via education and awareness is the place to start. Often, awareness and basic prevention is all a Realtor needs to do to prevent it from ever happening. But in order to stop wire fraud from ever happening, the real estate industry needs a solution like Safewire now provides.

It’s not a question of if the coronavirus will affect Realtors and their businesses, but when, and to what extent. Coronavirus hysteria, or simple interest or concern) is everywhere. You can’t look anywhere online without seeing mention of the coronavirus, and you can’t visit any grocery store without seeing people hoarding bottled water and toilet paper… if they even had any in stock. There are plenty of medical professionals, including the Surgeon General of the United States, who think the hysteria and fear is way overblown at this point, but nonetheless, being prepared is always prudent.

This week, we’re talking about the economic effects the coronavirus will likely have on the housing market, and real estate agents’ businesses specifically. 

More than just talking about it, we’re discussing specific things Realtors can do to prevent taking a big hit to their business, and even some ways to take a big step forward while many of our Realtor competitors are pulling back and spending less on marketing. 

As we’ve seen these last few days, mortgage interest  rates have dropped to their lowest levels EVER. We’re seeing mortgage rates that start with a 2. But this isn’t all good for Realtors and Mortgage loan officers. 

I believe that we’re about to enter the toughest time to buy a home, possibly ever. The always competitive spring market is just starting, at a time when buyers will be coming out of the woodworks to buy while interest rates are so low. At the same time, many sellers who do not need to sell will choose not to, either out of coronavirus worries about strangers in their homes, but also the new attractiveness of refinancing at historically low rates.

Realtors, prepare for crazy times ahead.
