  • How to tune in to your menstrual cycle to make your period your superpower with Kezia Hall (part II)
We have a part TWO episode coming at you this week with Kezia Hall, a holistic nutritionist based in Scotland who was on the show a few weeks ago. We talked Kezia’s personal health journey, how she turned from dieting and restriction to a more intuitive, mindful approach to eating by learning to listen to your body’s signals. She returns to the show to discuss the most common complaints and struggles she hears from women about their menstrual cycle. Everything from low energy, “flooding”, to sore breasts, Kezia breaks down the reasons as to why certain bodies behave differently before, during, and after your period. Kezia dispels any shame or misconceptions women have about their cycle and offers practical advice on nutrition, stress management, and hormonal balance.
This time, we’re talking specifically about what we can all do during the different phases of our cycles to bring them back into balance, be less painful, and to troubleshoot many of the issues women typically experience around their cycles. We’re also chatting about disordered eating, anxiety and digestive issues, and estrogen dominance. Let’s jump right in!
Make sure you listen to part I HERE!
    Discussed on Today’s Episode:

The impact of ingesting iron-rich and nutrient dense foods during your menstrual cycle
Creative Mindset: Maturing an egg and setting your self up for the next cycle!
Painful Ovulation? Look into seed cycling! Estrogen rich foods may help
Why am I feeling so bad on my period?
How stress profoundly effects your hormones and your next period
Mindful and intuitive eating: Blood sugar management
Why women should prioritize their health instead of suffering quietly during their periods
Optimizing on digestion: creating a parasympathetic state of being
Tummy troubles during your period? You aren’t alone!

  • Stop the binge-restrict cycle and embrace taking up space
Special episode coming at you guys today! I’m on vacation, and it’s also National Eating Disorders Awareness week, so I wanted to give you guys a deeper look into my own personal story and how my approach to nutrition has evolved over the years from my personal health journey, and working with clients with disordered eating and helping them break free of the diet cycle. This episode is one where Steph Gaudreau, from Harder to Kill Radio, interviewed me on her show last year – so instead of you guys listening to me interviewing someone this week, it’s the other way around!
We’re chatting about why we’re all so confused about what to eat, why we don’t trust our bodies, and how we can stop the binge-restrict cycle, heal our relationship with food, and learn that we don’t need to shrink ourselves and do whatever is necessary to lose weight in order to be more worthy in this world.

  • Fix Your Sleep and Optimize Your Health with Tara Youngblood
Today Tara Youngblood, fusion scientist and self-proclaimed “sleep geek” joins Dana on the podcast to talk about…you guessed it, sleep! Quality sleeping habits are becoming more and more of a struggle for many people around the world. Many of us constantly have blue light in our faces from our computers, our phones and binging Netflix before bed. In fact, the CDC (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention) has declared Sleep Disorders a public epidemic (eek!!). Studies have shown that poor sleeping habits can lead to autoimmune issues, heart disease, lowered sex drive, memory loss and more.
In today’s episode Tara breaks down how temperature and blue light can affect our ability to get deep sleep, the pro’s and con’s of using sleep trackers, how our hormones affect our sleep, and tips for creating a night time routine that will help you fall asleep faster and get more REM sleep.

This week’s interview is with Kezia Hall, a holistic nutritionist based in Scotland! Kezia is an expert on women’s health and hormones and today we’re chatting about her personal story from joining a dieting club at age 11 to intuitive eating and using food as medicine, not an emotional crutch. • Trust and control vs a healthier relationship with food, with Katherine Herbison
This week on the podcast we have Katherine Herbison, the health coach behind Choosing Balance and one of the amazing ladies behind the Embracing Balance Podcast. We’re chatting about Katherine’s personal health journey with an eating disorder at a young age, going through recovery, and coming to the intuitive eating and Health at Every Size approach. We’re discussing how a lot of people assume that in order to have a healthier relationship with food, they just need to learn to control themselves around food more. BUT how controlling your food does not lead to food freedom and peace. Instead it leads to feeling more out of control. We chat about trust, and why so many people have trust issues around our own self-worth, food and exercise – and finally, how making peace with your body size requires letting your body get to its natural size, and giving your body permission for where it wants to be.

  • So you want to lose weight, with Cristina Hoyt
Cristina Hoyt is back and today we’re digging into a REALLY touchy subject for this time of year that hits home for a lot of people – weight loss. Specifically, we’re talking about WHY we all feel like we need and want to lose weight (or it’s basically a death sentence), and how Cristina and I approach the topic of weight loss as non-diet, weight-inclusive nutritionists.
PS – want to know my big update? Check out the reveal HERE.
    Discussed on today’s episode:

The misconception that the Health at Every Size movement is weight loss shaming
    Weight neutrality
WHY we all feel like we need to lose weight
The dominant narrative surrounding health is that we need to be a certain weight in order to be “healthy” or to improve our health
How weight stigma is built into the medical system
Cultural and social stigma around larger bodies and “health”
Action step: so you want to lose weight. What can you do to understand this desire, and what it’s really rooted in?

If you’re looking for a resource to improve your relationship with food and your body in the new year, Cristina and I created a 12-week program to help you break free from dieting and finally make peace with food and your body, and help you troubleshoot the areas where we commonly see people getting stuck. We’ll show you how to recognize the diet mentality in all aspects of life, how to spot real nutrition information vs. dieting advice, and how to start substituting behaviors that will promote your long-term mental, emotional, and physical health. We’ll teach you how to start making food, exercise, and lifestyle choices from a place of self-care, rather than fear or self-control. You’ll learn about emotional eating, cravings, demystifying nutrition myths and fads, and how to break free of the constant cycle of restriction and “falling off the wagon” (heavy air quotes), and so much more. But this isn’t just about education.
The course is action-oriented, so you can start DOING something about this right now. It includes weekly video and audio lessons (so if you like podcasts, this will be right up your alley!), weekly worksheets and action steps, the support of a private facebook group, and a 1-on-1 coaching session with Dana or Cristina is even included too!

  • 101 | Inflammation and Intuitive Eating, and finding Food Peace with Dr Will Cole
This is one of those episodes that I was teasing last week – a clinician who is immersed in the functional medicine world but not necessarily the non-diet culture world, but who takes a non-diet approach to therapeutic elimination protocols. This is one of those people for whom if you were only in the non-diet-culture world, you probably would never seek him out or hear his expertise. But our conversation with Dr. Will Cole today, we’re focusing on nutrition science from an intuitive eating middle ground, while talking about bioindividuality and how body image and stress play into health, and finding freedom from food …which you might never expect to hear from someone who previously has done a lot of work in the keto world. We’re digging into inflammation and intuitive eating, and finding food peace within a functional medicine approach with Dr. Cole today!
Disclaimer here. We’re talking about on this episode on how it’s so important to do the mindset work before you can really get to the anti-inflammatory work (which involves removing non-food triggers, but sometimes involves making some food changes) – if you feel like even hearing someone talk about making these kinds of food changes may be triggering for you or put you right back into yo-yo diet mode, the end of this episode might not be for you. But I’d encourage you to listen up to at least 40 minutes because there is some fantastic information in here about managing inflammation in a totally non-food-related way, talking about stress around food and body image and finding food peace that I know you will love.
    Discussed on today’s episode:

What food freedom means to Dr. Cole in the scope of functional medicine.
How to find balance between a complicated history with food, and finding real healing and food peace
Finding the middle ground between “eat whatever you want because it doesn’t matter” and the orthorexic tendencies of dieting dogma
The key piece of intuitive eating that most people are missing out on, and lowering inflammation in order to be able to hear your intuition
Inflammation 101: how it isn’t evil – it’s when inflammation gets out of control that it can cause ill health effects, and the different sources of inflammation
How inflammation manifests in the body in different ways – and why this means that there isn’t just one “anti-inflammatory diet” that will work for everyone
Why you might have inflammation going on even when you’re only eating healthy food. 1) how does this happen 2) what can you do about it?
    How does stress impact inflammation?
How, for some people, even the prospect of going on an elimination protocol can be extremely stressful, especially if they have any history of chronic yo-yo dieting or disordered eating – and different ways you can work on inflammation without even touching food.
Where does body image and body stress play into inflammation?
