As an entrepreneur you are going to experience far more pressure and noise than the average person. A normal day in our lives would put the average person into a sweaty panic. You have an endless stream of things to react to and issues to deal with. You are growing your business, growing your team, and doing what you can to stay in momentum. None of us can do this alone, in order to grow your business you will need help. But you want a very specific type of help. You want advisers to make you feel comfortable, calm, present and aware. You want to stay away from the advisers who excite you, get you "motivated" and have too many ideas. Coming up with the ideas is your job, being grounded and making your life easier is the mission of everyone of your advisers.
You don't want to build the company where everyone belongs. In fact, that would be a disaster. You want to build a polarizing company with a clear culture that either drives people towards you or drives them away. The reason why so many entrepreneurs have trouble building teams is that they hire first for skill and then for cultural fit - if they consider a cultural fit at all. If someone doesn't fit your culture, it doesn't matter what skill level they have, it isn't going to work.
Social media has been very good for the private jet industry. Spend a few minutes on Facebook and you will encounter a lot of people flying in private jets. Speakers, authors, thought leaders And CEOs are flying private in record numbers. This is a decision that Cadey and I have been talking about for years. We have set an internal goal for our company, and once we get it, we are going to start flying private a lot of the time. I recorded this podcast to share with you how much has gone into making this decision, before you make it for yourself.
When I was younger, I read hundreds of personal development books. If you could send them all up with one thing, it would be… If you want massive success in your life, create congruency and alignment and everything around you will start moving fast. The problem I had when I was younger is that while many books share the concept of congruency, very few shared tactics. This became an obsession of mine. What are the tactics that will help create congruency and alignment for entrepreneurs 100% of the time? I didn't focus on everyone, instead I focused exclusively on the Entrepreneurial Personality Type. I asked the question over and over again "how can evolutionary hunters like us create massive congruency and momentum?" The result was a holistic approach to working with entrepreneurs. I realized that when we focus on improving our lives in all areas, congruency starts to create itself. In this short message I received from a client of ours, Isla Books, she eloquently and clearly described what it feels like when you achieve congruency and momentum that comes with it. I'm sure you will be as inspired by her as I am.
Over 90% of entrepreneurs never build a team. There is a reason..
Asking for help is one of the hardest things for people like us to do. We have all been on a team, or tried to do the project with other people that failed because no one would work as hard as we did.
Everyone of us has asked for help and then been let down. Some of us, myself included, have had a hard time understanding how to even access help growing up. All of this leads to difficulty in building a team, and becoming a transformational leader. Once we understand this difficulty and realize that if we are vulnerable with our team, they can actually help us when we need it the most and everything gets easier.
Albert Einstein said compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe. It either works for you or against you, and far too many entrepreneurs have it working against them. There is a psychic energy to debt and an affect on our ability to think clearly, make rational decisions, and create our future. We have no idea how deeply and dramatically it is affecting us until we are out of it.
Far too many entrepreneurs think that it's working for them when in reality, it can cause more pressure and noise than just about anything else.
If you are ready to show up in a different way, have a new level of confidence in the world, and know what you are really capable of, eliminate your debt and everything will change.
Evolutionary hunters are physiologically sensitive momentum based beings and we are highly sensitive to constraint. This is the reason that I always start any coaching relationship with a conversation about water. Water is the ultimate performance enhancer because it doesn't matter what you eat, what supplements you take, or how well you take care of yourself, if you aren't hydrated you aren't optimized. Even if you have tried to drink more water and have found it difficult, once you reawaken your Natural Thirst, you will drink more water than you ever thought possible.
When you tell someone that their job is easy, you invalidate their contribution before they even get started. A couple years ago we were in a partnership with someone who consistently and constantly told everyone on our team that what they were doing was easy. He would say crazy things like,"we need this entire website updated in the next two weeks but if we all pulled together and put in some extra effort it should be easy." Everyone listening to him knew it wouldn't be easy but everyone listening was also afraid to contradict him. Instead the team did their best to deliver and he was always disappointed. The problem was so dramatic that we decided to stop working with him. I don't know how to grow a company without a team, and every person in my organization makes a valuable contribution. I also do not believe that anyone's job is "easy". In fact a lot of the people that work for me do things that I can't and wouldn't know how to do. Instead of invalidating your teams contributions, make certain that everyone knows that what they are doing to grow your business matters.
A business is nothing more than a series of processes that are repeated overtime to generate a consistent results. It seems pretty simple, so why is running a business so difficult? There is a reason why over 90% of businesses in the United States are sole proprietorships. Very few business owners ever build processes that are clear enough for them to get help. By building processes, on paper first, outside of any system, you are building the foundational value of your company. Not only that but you're actually making it easier for you to run. When you have the checklist or process document someone his been using for a function in your organization and that person leaves, you can quickly replace them. This will build a new sense of security and safety for you in your organization. You will need it, because when you build a deeper process, your company will grow much faster and it is much more likely that you will be promoting people rather than having them leave.
Multiple times a week I get asked the question "should I work with my spouse?" I believe that working with your spouse, given the right process and environment, is one of the biggest accelerators to entrepreneurial growth. Working with your spouse is one of the greatest privileges an entrepreneur can have. We get to plan together, achieve together, and change the world together. When done correctly, there is very little that is as amazing as working with your spouse and growing an empire together.
