  • #147 - Joey Fry: Surviving Suicide *Trigger Warning*

*Trigger warning* - content may be disturbing or upsetting.

In a world more designed to pull us apart than unite us, what can we do to reconnect to our innate human need to live life together?

At age 23, Joey felt so alone he attempted to take his own life. He awoke in the ICU 6 days later to find his right leg had been amputated. This same feeling of isolation and loneliness now effects 1 in 4 Australians. Now fully recovered from the experience, Joey searches for answers as to why it happened to him and how he can stop it happening again. Can we find a way to live together, as united communities, to fight loneliness and reconnect in a world that is designed to pull us apart?

The Great Separation is now available to stream free on SBS On Demand. It is a ground-breaking social insights documentary that follows protagonist Joey Fry on his journey to understand loneliness and connection, guided by experts along the way. The film has been created with the directorial oversight of award-winning filmmaker Shannon Swan and cultural observer Simon Hammond.

Trusting your instincts and pushing forward in spite of people telling you that it can’t be done often leads to incredible outcomes. Our gut instincts often guide us beyond the boundaries of what seems feasible on paper. Some of the most remarkable achievements have emerged when individuals chose to ignore the doubt & past statistics and push ahead with determination and resilience. Success often arises from a refusal to accept limitations and an unwavering belief in the possibility of achieving the seemingly impossible. Today’s guest lives by this mantra...

  • #143 - Dr Mark McBride-Wright: Diversity & Inclusion (Brick by Brick #26)

Mental health remains a pressing issue across industries, but the construction industry stands out in an alarming way. 77% of employees say that they experience burnout at their current job. At best, this means increased sick days and reduced productivity in companies. At worst, this means an increased risk of suicide, with the construction industry having a suicide rate 4.5 times higher than the general public. This is unacceptable.

Dr Mark McBride-Wright CEng, MIChemE is a recognised diversity and inclusion leader, who speaks about psychological safety in inclusive teams.

He is founder and Managing Director of EqualEngineers, a company offering a wide array of diversity & inclusion consultancy and training services, as well as creative events.
