Dr. Dan and pediatrician (and mother of four) Dr. Shelly Vaziri Flais discuss the tools parents need to start the lifelong process of raising their boys into men who are mentally healthy, empathetic, and committed to gender equality. Dr. Flais explains concrete techniques for parents to push back against cultural stereotypes and toxic masculinity as they nurture their sons. Because “kids do as they see,” the work of being role models for gender equality starts in the home. This conversation-starter episode emphasizes the benefits of gender equality for boys and girls and men and women, and discusses it not only in the context of the family, but also the extended family, school, and greater community. The interview is inspired by Shelly’s book American Academy of Pediatrics’ Nurturing Boys to Be Better Men: Gender Equality Starts at Home.
Shelly Vaziri Flais, MD, FAAP, is a board-certified practicing pediatrician, mother of three sons and one daughter, and an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann & Robert H.
