Coach, what’s your zone of genius?

Many coaches will say it’s being a good listener or being able to hear more than what’s said.

Those are highly valuable skills and quite common in coaches.

What I’m talking about is a unique talent that, like a fingerprint, becomes central to your brand.

It might be a method that’s all yours. An unusual or rare expertise. A brain child.

Don’t worry if you don’t know yours yet.

It takes time to unfold and awareness to notice.

As your coaching business grows and you serve many clients, your zone of genius may suddenly bloom.

And you leverage it. Have fun with it. Allow it to mature you as a business owner and coach.

I made 4 big mistakes during the start-up of my coaching business and lived to tell the tale.

I've experienced multiple magical turning points in my business as well. 

Wonderful things will come to your coaching business if you don’t let mistakes stop you.

Mistakes are still the best way to learn. It's a time-honored tradition. 

Growing a coaching business is a total experiment. It's a long-term gamble that’s worth the risk if you are in it to win it.

When I was able to see my business in that light it became easier to power through mistakes by making small adjustments instead of over reacting.

New coaches often say “I’m not good at selling.”

That’s a fixed mindset based on misconceptions about what selling is. Believing it will make it so for you.

When I was in my 20’s, I worked in the shoe department of Macy’s. It was a prized job in retail because commission sales can mean significant income without management responsibilities.

I was good at it because I paid close attention to each single person I was serving. 

I asked questions to discover what they wanted and then, brought them options that fit.

They felt heard and understood.

But when I became a coach, I got up in my head about selling and forgot about connection.

I worried what hearing ‘No’ would mean about me. And that was my big mistake. 

Sales is not really about you.

This episode is inspired by my own breaches in integrity over the 2 decades plus that I’ve been a coach and some I see other coaches stumble with as well.

If you took coach training, hopefully you were provided with some standard ethical guidelines that need to be followed with your clients. Things like:

·      Keeping your coaching client’s contact info and what they say confidential unless they give express permission for you to share some part of it.

·      Setting personal and time boundaries with clients.

Beyond that, no one talks much about ethics and integrity in coaching.

Coaching is not currently a regulated field so it’s doubly important that you, as the professional coach, regulate yourself. That helps all coaches and the future of coaching.

Complaints about coaches hurt the field of coaching. And we really don’t want this field to be regulated, as it would greatly change the coaching industry for the worse.

Have you realized that YOU are a PROFESSIONAL? Take this in.

Own the fact that what you do is a professional service and you are a trained professional offering serious and consequential experiences through your coaching.

When I say serious and consequential, I mean that you could hurt someone just as easily as you could help them.

A new VIP client of mine read an article about SEO—search engine optimization—and went down a rabbit hole of stress.

I assured them that we addressed SEO for a coach by doing market research on their chosen target audience and applying smart keywords to everything we wrote for her coaching business.

And, for the business model we created, with high-touch, high-ticket offers, they would not need to dig deeper into SEO. The relief was palpable.

Search traffic is NOT the best way to attract serious coaching clients who will show up, do the work and make real progress.

And, besides that, AI is stealing attention away from original content on searches at an increasing rate.

Let your left brain relax. You don’t have to play in that cold SEO sandbox.

But there are some things you do need to know. Let’s talk about that.

Will MORE training make you successful as a coach?

Additional course work can be stimulating and potentially useful.

It can also be addictive—a form of self sabotage.

There’s even a term for it. Bright shiny object syndrome.

Sometimes it’s an unconscious and conflicting goal to prolong student coach mode.

Coaches in their early years are vulnerable to this. But it’s a costly mindset and habit.

I’ve been there. In my early years I spent So. Much. Money.

Little of it actually made any difference. It was either because…
