It's instinct to want to protect them from that hurt, which often comes in the form of covering for that other parent. It could be as simple as getting the birthday gift for the party they're invited to on your ex's weekend, or as big as making excuses when your ex doesn't show up when they're supposed to. But shielding them from the inevitable disappointment from a difficult person isn't always the best thing for your kids.
