In the United States, in the present context of the rise of nationalism, racism and sexism, Bible texts are often being subverted to serve the purposes of the powerful. By doing so, faith is used to legitimize structural injustices in society. According to United States Latina theologian Cecilia González-Andrieu, it is high time that the Gospel be flipped back around to its original orientation: as a radical call to action to liberate and open spaces for the voiceless.
