Raising Resilience: The Intersectionality of Race, Motherhood, and Mental Health

Listen Later

One in seven women in the U.S. suffers from Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Black mothers suffer at even higher rates and are less likely to be treated. For this reason, this conversation is extremely important not only for expectant mothers, but also for all of us because we’re either personally affected or have known someone who is silently suffering.

Guest spotlight:

This week we spoke to Tiffany Thompson and Whitney Coble, the dynamic duo behind the North Carolina based non-profit organization- Raising Resilience. They are  Licensed Professional Counselors certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy and working to obtain certification in Maternal Mental Health. Their clinical experience includes providing services to women, children, and adolescents who struggle with daily stressors, traumatic events, and additional mental health diagnoses.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What are Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
  • Possible signs and Symptoms
  • Tips on how to support moms around us
  • Pregnancy/self-care during a pandemic
  • Raising Black children and how to address the current socio political events with smaller children
