Buckle up cos I’ve invited the much-loved Dr Bill Saunders back for a second chat. If you haven’t yet listened to our first conversation episode #168 on the show that would be a great place to start though not entirely necessary it does give a lot of context to our discussion today.. or should I say therapy session. This is basically me leaving the door to the therapy lounge slightly ajar for you guys to sneak in and have an earwig on some of myself and Bill's personal experiences with childhood, adulthood and everything in between.
Dr Bill Saunders is a psychologist and lecturer with over 4 decades of expertise specialising in the management of adult psychopathology, addictive behaviours, the co-occurrence of both and the impact of childhood trauma on adult psychological functioning.

Mick Harrington belted out a rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow that turned the chairs of all four judges 18 seconds into his audition on The Voice 2021. From mowing lawns and punching faces to writing poetry and making it through to the grand final of The Voice, Mick is an incredibly interesting and expressive flannel-wearing country lad and I think you're going to love listening in on our banter today.
We talk about his experience on the show, working with Jess Mauboy, the creative process, growing up, losing professional boxing fights and generally winning at life. Don't forget to check out his music!

Well, the debut Weekend Workshop episode last week was a hit (phew, thank #%@$ for that hey). And from it came a few points I thought were worth covering in this weeks episode, so here I am giving my two cents worth (for what it's worth) on how to be a brilliant podcast host and interviewer.
Now the imposter-syndrome voice in my head wishes to announce that I'm no expert in the space of interviewing and I still very much have my L plates on. The voice I prefer to listen to is reminding me that I have performed almost quarter of a million interviews/conversations in under a year and a half, co-hosted an additional couple of hundred with a front row seat to watch interviewing first hand and further to that, I've been on quite a number of other peoples podcasts where I have experienced hosting on the flip side. So let's acknowledge that perhaps I've learned and experienced a thing or two worth hearing.
You can take a great conversationalist and sit them in front of a microphone and watch the ground crumble beneath their feet as they struggle to string their words together in their usual, listenable manner. It's the job of a host/interviewer to create the atmosphere, energy, flow and safe space for the guest to perform at their peak.
I've been in interviews where the connection between myself as the guest and the host has been difficult to maintain as they focus on their 'producer' roles or internally fuss over their next question - 'Hey bro, listen up I'm answering your last question'.
Some guests require you to pivot, change tact and adapt on the fly to ensure you're going to end up with an hour of engaging banter for your listeners. An awareness on what sets us up for success as a host will reduce the likelihood of you spending an hour chatting with someone whilst thinking of excuses you can use to not publish the episode.
With zero experience when I started and as of today 240 episodes under my belt I'm thrilled to say that I have never had to turf an episode. So here's some of the things that made that a reality for me.

When we speak, we often focus on our words.. but what story is our 'voice' telling the recipients of these words?
Franca Locandro is a voice teacher, singer, pianist, musician and presenter and she has a hell of a lot to say (in a well trained voice) when it comes to these pipes we spend our life communicating with.
When I think of a voice coach I think of a vocalist or pop artist aiming to make it in the world of music, but funnily enough, for someone who spends the vast majority of their day barking down a microphone there's a lot more to the craft of speaking and communicating than we might be aware of. How we can use this instrument that forms our words to connect, influence and make a greater impact in the world.
If you're a speaker, podcaster, singer, teacher or sales person (to name a few) this conversation will get you paying attention next time to have something to say...

Named by TIME magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World,” Dean Karnazes has pushed his body and mind to inconceivable limits. Among his many accomplishments, he has run 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days. He’s run across Death Valley in the middle of summer, and he’s run a marathon to the South Pole. On ten separate occasions he’s run a 200-mile relay race solo, racing alongside teams of twelve. His list of competitive achievements include winning the World’s Toughest Footrace, the Badwater Ultramarathon, and winning the 4 Deserts Challenge, racing in the hottest, driest, windiest and coldest places on earth. It's fair to say he runs a touch more than I do that's for sure!
And would you believe he's never sustained an injury?!?
We talk about the day (or night) he put down his last birthday drink, stripped down to his shorts and left the bar to run an impromptu marathon. We talk about the loss of his sister, the gain of his passion and purpose and what drive him to run and run and run :)
Enjoy!

If you're a parent, planning to be a parent or have ever had a parent then this episode is going to float your boat. I have dubbed Dr Vanessa Lapointe 'The Parent Whisperer'.
Dr Vanessa is one of the world's most respected voices in child psychology. She is also child, a mother, a wife, a best selling author, a world renowned speaker and someone I am incredibly proud to be introducing you to today if you've never stumbled across her before.
I pick Dr Vanessa's brains on early childhood development and how the environment and relationship with the parents influence this. We talk about the crucial necessity for boredom, schooling and education, developmental disorders and nurturing an abused child. Oh, and of course how child psychology almost always reveals the parents 'hurt buttons'.
I know you're going to LOVE Vanessa!

Imagine if funeral crashing was a job!!
Well, for Bill Edgar it actually is.
He’s the professional teller of secrets and for 10 grand a pop you can be certain the last word at your funeral is your own. A eulogy for the secrets you don’t wish to take to the grave. Aptly named “The Coffin Confessor” Bill has let the cat out of the bag when the deceased best mate has been hitting on his wife… Fella’s might think twice huh.
A one-of-a-kind professional, a man on a mission to make good on these last requests on behalf of his soon-to-be-deceased clients. A man who in his own words has no respect for the living, who will do anything for the dead.
Bill has been many things in this life: son of one of Australia’s most notorious gangsters, homeless street-kid, maximum-security prisoner, car thief, professional punching bag, philosopher, inventor, private investigator, victim of horrific childhood sexual abuse and an activist fighting to bring down the institutions that let it happen. A survivor.
All of these things we hear a little about in this episode, enjoy!

Vickie Simos, Author of The Boxer Within, discovered her passion at the intersection of psychotherapy and martial arts. A combination which not only dragged Vickie beyond her own self-doubt and self-deprecation but became the platform for which she helps others.
A fighter, a lover, a therapist and one hell of a big heart, Vickie and I talk about her own personal experiences before diving deep into an insightful chat around training kids, being adaptable to the needs of children on the spectrum and why training youngsters lights Vickie's fire.

Roll With The Punches is where we step into the ring and go toe to toe with the hard sh*t life throws our way.
Hosted by former boxing champ turned strength coach and speaker Tiff Cook, RWTP brings you big conversations with world-class guests about psychology, relationships, trauma, the brain, and the patterns that can make a bloody mess of our lives.
If you're curious about human behaviour, keen to challenge the stories you tell yourself, and want to understand why the hell you do what you do, you're in the right place. Tune in. Tiff's in your corner.
The goal? To question what you've always believed, understand yourself a little better, and turn those aha moments into actual change.
Because knowing better and doing better are two very different things.
And let's be honest... life's gonna keep throwing punches. We may as well learn how to roll with them.
