On this week's episode of SDR we talk about the similarity between Christian's weight loss journey and the process of getting a service department into shape. When you boil it down, the recipe is pretty similar in both scenarios. First you have to admit to yourself that you've let things get out of hand and come to terms with that reality. Then you need to set some goals, and get resources to help you stay on track. The biggest roadblock in both cases is your own mental frame, and it's crucially important that you get in the right mindset. Once you do, you'll see a pretty amazing ripple effect on the rest of your life. Once you fix your business, you'll start to fix other parts of your life the same way.

This week's call-in question comes from a Parts manager who's looking to get our take on customer-supplied parts. There is a bit of a give and take here. As Chris sees it, we shouldn't necessarily see this offer as an issue. There is an opportunity to make a friend here, and you do get to charge for the labor at the end of the day. But you do have to make things abundantly clear with the customer: we can put this part in for you, but we never diagnosed the car for you and we can't guarantee that your problem will be solved. Warren Buffet had some interesting perspective to share at Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting this year. "I know where Apple's going to be in 5 to 10 years, but I have no idea where the automotive industry is going to be in 5 to 10 years." In many ways, he's right. There's a lot of uncertainty in car sales. The influence of Tesla's direct-to-consumer model cannot be understated. But what he failed to mention is how fixed operations will factor into the equation. There are 300 million cars on the road in the United States, and they're not going to disappear tomorrow. This week's call-in question comes from a manager who's trying to figure out how to make Saturday shifts work and getting some push-back from his team. Our recommendation is that if you're going to do Saturdays, you have to commit. Make it a full work day and have a technician who works Tuesday thru Saturday and make that their normal work week. You could also operate the entire shop on 4/10 shifts Monday thru Saturday. That means you have multiple techs on Monday to Thursday, as well as multiple techs on Wednesday thru Saturday.

This is a question we get all the time! There are different schools of thought and Chris and Christian have slightly varying takes. As Chris sees it, offering to pay CP time on warranty work isn't as good of a recruiting tool as you might think it is. Being able to pay $45/hour because you understand how to manipulate your ELR is much better. As Christian sees it, offering this perk can actually be a decent sign of creativity depending on your market/brand, because we want to do really good work regardless. So it can be a tool in your arsenal, but you're going to need to modify your ELR to make it work regardless. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

This week's call-in question comes from a service manager who's looking to set up an acquisition process for service vehicles. As Chris sees it, the most important factor here is going to be setting up a scenario where your service drive is 80% appointments, 20% drive-ins. This scenario is ideal for a lot of reasons, one of them being that you'll be able to better prepare for these trade-in opportunities.
