Ruari Fairbairns used to be a wild drinker in a culture where alcohol is accepted and even expected. As he grows older and starts a family, he realizes he can't have a happy marriage and a successful career if he continues to drink. He decides to quit, but he finds that the people he used to party with couldn't understand that he wasn't going to drink anymore. This is when he and a friend come up with the idea of the One Year No Beer, a challenge for people who want to try a sober lifestyle but don't have the support from family and friends.
