Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is an author, speaker, and board-certified physician. She has an active medical practice in Alabama (near the Birmingham area). Dr. Dalton-Smith is a national and international media resource on the mind, body, spirit connection and has been featured in Women's Day, Redbook, and First For Women magazine. She is the author of Set Free to Live and Come Empty (winner 2016 Golden Scroll Nonfiction Book of the Year and 2016 Illumination Award Gold medalist). She is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association and a repeat keynote speaker at their annual gathering. She has shared her tips on merging faith and medicine with over 16,000 health care professionals to encourage the current and next generation of doctors to treat the whole person.

I wanted to Dr. Saundra to come on the show to talk about her new book Sacred Rest. This is a really eye-opening conversation that provides a ton of insight into 7 different types of rest and why each is important. Dr. Saundra’s work goes much deeper than just the need for sleep. I think this conversation will be just the permission you might need to incorporate more types of rest (and joy!) into your daily life.

Bonnie Mae is a Shameless Mom to two sons ages 10 and 12, as well as a survivor and warrior of an abusive relationship that spanned 10 years. She has a passion for advocating for the needs and safety of her children as well as herself. She has an associates degree in human services. She used to think she wasn’t using putting her degree to good use - until recently. She recently took the bold, brave steps to become an educator and speaker to youth and young adults - teaching around all issues related to domestic violence. She teaches the warning signs of abusive behavior, offers advice on how to safely get out of abusive relationships, and coaches around the impact of abuse on one’s life.  She speaks at various organizations, as well as middle and high schools.

Bonnie reached out to me a few months ago when I said I wanted to broach the subject of domestic violence on the show. I’m deeply honored that she took the brave step to share her story and her lessons with us all. Her story will have ripple effects that she will never see - that may well save lives of other Shameless Moms.

One of the themes I’ve been seeing repeatedly in our community recently is around feeling stuck in roles that feel out of alignment with our core values. This shows up in our jobs when we see that companies we work for don’t truly stand behind their mission statements.

This happens in our families when we see our siblings, parents or in-laws not acting in high integrity. 

This happens in our friendships when we see the women around us judging and gossiping and putting other women down.

Shameless Mom Con was last weekend and the power, momentum, and magic that came out of 3 days of Shameless Mom togetherness is enough to light my life - like forever.

Dear Perfectionist Friend,

I SEE you.

I see you stuck in your mess. 

I see you holding all those dreams, but crippled by analysis paralysis every time you think about taking the next step. 

I see you waiting until just the right time to take the next right step - yet never actually finding just the right time. 

I see you wanting more and feeling nervous, sometimes even terrified, about going after more. 

I see you worrying about what others might think if you flop. 

I see you anxiously stuffing your dreams into deep hiding places because you think you might fail. 

If you want to know how I can see you so clearly, it’s because I AM you. 

I know what it’s like to desire perfection so deeply you cannot make a decision or take any action - because... FEAR. 

I know what it’s like to spend inordinate amounts of mental energy on a decision because you think making the wrong decision could ruin everything.

I know what it’s like to stay stuck in your head full of worry and doubt, while parading through the world with a big cheesy grin that screams, “I’m fine. I’m even better than fine. I’m GREAT. #EVERYDAMNDAY. SO GREAT!” - but actually, feel not great at all. 

Probably the most valuable lesson I’ve learned in motherhood and entrepreneurship is that perfect sucks. In fact, perfect is paralyzing. And imperfect action is ridiculously liberating.
